Smooth Tasks
Plasma 4 Extensions
Score 93%
Description:

This is a fork of mbaszczewskis STasks plasmoid. For the original STasks code go there:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/STasks?content=99739

This taskbar replacement has window peeking similar to Windows 7 when you use the kwin 'highlight window' effect. Even if this effect is not used you can click the tooltip in order to activate the corresponding window.

About Launcher Support, Grouping and Sorting:
A feature often requested in the comments is support for launchers and a more comprehensive context menu. Because the information about which task items there are, their grouping, sorting and state (minimized, demands attention, is active, ...) and even their context menu is all provided by libtaskmanager, such feature requests should be directed to kdelibs. I wrote a wishlist entry in the kde bugtracker for these features: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=207902 If you want this feature vote for this wish.

Update:
Launcher support exists in KDE 4.6. I will incorporate this feature once KDE 4.6 is available in Fedora (and I have time).

Update 2:
I pulled all changes made by flupp and jimi312, which amongst other things add launcher support. You can download the most recent source directly from the mercurial repository:
https://bitbucket.org/panzi/smooth-tasks/get/tip.tar.bz2

However, because I experienced some bugs with the launcher support (sometimes they are shown when the associated app is running and sometimes they are not shown when the associated app is not running) I did not make a new release yet. If I can find the bugs in a few hours tomorrow (2nd Apr 2011) or flupp/jimi312 fix them I will make a new release. I don't know how much time I have to work on Smooth Tasks. :/

Update 3:
The mentioned bugs concerning launchers seem also to be present with KDE's original taskbar, so I think the bug lies in libtaskmanager and not in Smooth Tasks.

Bugreports and Wishes:
http://bitbucket.org/panzi/smooth-tasks/issues/

Packages:
Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora have official packages.

Fedora:
sudo yum install kde-plasma-smooth-tasks

And to get meaningful backtraces:
sudo debuginfo-install kde-plasma-smooth-tasks

Note: I didn't check the validity of any of these packages!

Poll: Which Layout should stay?
I have created a poll about which of the various layouts supported by Smooth Tasks should be kept and which I can drop:
http://twtpoll.com/dm5m96

Please participate in this poll so I know whether I have to bother with supporting all of the currently provided layouts. In case you do not use multiple rows please choose the first option. In this case most layouts should look the same anyway.

The launcher support for the original Tasks applet has been already added to the recent KDE4.6 sources.
Do you thing that it will be possible to add this to the Smooth Tasks?

There's an earlier thread and he is planning to add it. I'm trying out the launcher support now in the task bar of 4.6 beta. It's pretty minimal and rather hidden in the popup menus: If you look hard you find a menu item "Show launcher when not running" or something like that. What I'm hoping will happen with smooth tasks is integration with Zeitgeist or Nepomuk (or whatever's best) to get something like the Win7 Jumplists. (Consider that a feature request. :D DockbarX and Docky both use Zeitgeist.)

The widget won't install in Kubuntu Maverick or higher using KDE 4.6 beta due to dependency issues.

I have a similar problem. I can't add the plasmoid under KDE-4.6 beta2 because it crashes Plasma (I had to first clean up my Plasma settings since KDE would not start normally).

The package compiles fine using this beta though.

Strange. It's working perfectly fine here. Here are the exact steps I followed; hopefully this helps (I didn't have to clear my KDE configuration upon upgrading from KDE SC 4.5.4 to 4.5.85, by the way).

1) sudo apt-get install cmake kdelibs5-dev kdebase-workspace-dev checkinstall
(You may or may not need libqt4-dev as well - I already had it installed.)

2) In the directory of the extracted archive, run the following commands:
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=$(kde4-config --prefix) ../
make
sudo checkinstall
...follow the prompts...
kbuildsycoca4

That's it. If it's still crashing Plasma for you, kill Plasma manually (Alt+F2 -> killall plasma-desktop), then run "plasma-desktop &" from the terminal and post the output from when it crashes.

You were right. Fixed this by recompiling the package. Thanks!

I tried to find out the linked site where to place wishes but I could not find it so I place it now here.

I have setup where I dont have any buttons in window decoration (close, maximize, minimize etc) but I manage the windows with Alt+MB1/MB2 and from smooth task itself (click to minimize) and from KWin active screen edges (maximize/50% maximize).

The only problem is currently the way to close the window. As it only really has two ways:

1) Middle click the task (what I use)
2) Right click the task and selecting "close"

(yes, there are shortcuts like Alt+F4 etc to do it but they are harder).

One great functionality in smoothtask (etc) is that it is very easy to group or move tasks just by dragging them.

So my wish is to make it even simpler to close the window by simply dragging it up.

Think about same way as users remove objects from Mac OS X dock and it disappears with puff.

But just simply dragging a task away from the panel and it would get closed.

This way users could get the great power manage tasks from smooth tasks as well.

This conflicts with dragging tasks to the pager.

Report

I have never used pager widget separately on desktop and dragging tasks there as it is much easier to use grid desktop for that.

And thats why the "close the task" by dragging from taskpanel would be good optional configuration and it would feel natural. (why Apple even made that function to dock to remove icons from it as *puff*).

Why was support dropped for Smooth Tasks on Sabayon 5?!?! Every time I run updates Sulfur asks me if I want to uninstall this. And I most certainly do not as this is an awesome widget!!!

What is Sabayon 5 and Sulfur? Never heard of it before. (Well, I heard of the chemical element sulphur[1], but I guess this is something different.)

I just finished installing smooth tasks, however I guess I don't really know how to configure it as it looks nothing like the pictures I see all over the net. For me it looks just like a normal taskbar, but I can't add anything to it. It just shows the open programs. It definitely doesn't look like the W7 taskbar.

Is there something else that everyone else is also installing as well?

Sorry for this question is this project dead or there are some plans for future?
This is great project, I believe that it is the best plasmoid but there is no progress almost for a year (except a few bug fixes).

Report

The main two reasons for that are: It's more or less good enough for me and I don't have a lot time to spend on this plasma applet.

However, now that I have finally upgraded to a newer distribution (used Fedora 12 until today) I will commit some small bugfixes. Still have no time for the big animation rewrite I should do. I guess I'll do it if the APIs I use are not just deprecated but removed.

Thank you for this great applet! If you mind, I will propose one little enhancement.
Please, allow user to set width of expanded task more than 1000px in next release. It'll be only one small change in Appearance.ui file. This will enable single task to fill entire taskbar.

Is this pending change to libtaskmanager the feature we've all been pestering you about?

It's the work that needed to be done before he could implement this, yes.

So @panzi:
launchersupport in libtaskmanager is in kde-trunk for a few seconds.
So you finaly are able to implement what everybody wanted :)
If you have questions or wishes regarding the API, simply let me know.

Great work with smooth-tasks, keep it :)
