Smooth Tasks
Plasma 4 Extensions
Score 93%
Description:

This is a fork of mbaszczewskis STasks plasmoid. For the original STasks code go there:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/STasks?content=99739

This taskbar replacement has window peeking similar to Windows 7 when you use the kwin 'highlight window' effect. Even if this effect is not used you can click the tooltip in order to activate the corresponding window.

About Launcher Support, Grouping and Sorting:
A feature often requested in the comments is support for launchers and a more comprehensive context menu. Because the information about which task items there are, their grouping, sorting and state (minimized, demands attention, is active, ...) and even their context menu is all provided by libtaskmanager, such feature requests should be directed to kdelibs. I wrote a wishlist entry in the kde bugtracker for these features: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=207902 If you want this feature vote for this wish.

Update:
Launcher support exists in KDE 4.6. I will incorporate this feature once KDE 4.6 is available in Fedora (and I have time).

Update 2:
I pulled all changes made by flupp and jimi312, which amongst other things add launcher support. You can download the most recent source directly from the mercurial repository:
https://bitbucket.org/panzi/smooth-tasks/get/tip.tar.bz2

However, because I experienced some bugs with the launcher support (sometimes they are shown when the associated app is running and sometimes they are not shown when the associated app is not running) I did not make a new release yet. If I can find the bugs in a few hours tomorrow (2nd Apr 2011) or flupp/jimi312 fix them I will make a new release. I don't know how much time I have to work on Smooth Tasks. :/

Update 3:
The mentioned bugs concerning launchers seem also to be present with KDE's original taskbar, so I think the bug lies in libtaskmanager and not in Smooth Tasks.

Bugreports and Wishes:
http://bitbucket.org/panzi/smooth-tasks/issues/

Packages:
Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora have official packages.

Fedora:
sudo yum install kde-plasma-smooth-tasks

And to get meaningful backtraces:
sudo debuginfo-install kde-plasma-smooth-tasks

Note: I didn't check the validity of any of these packages!

Poll: Which Layout should stay?
I have created a poll about which of the various layouts supported by Smooth Tasks should be kept and which I can drop:
http://twtpoll.com/dm5m96

Please participate in this poll so I know whether I have to bother with supporting all of the currently provided layouts. In case you do not use multiple rows please choose the first option. In this case most layouts should look the same anyway.

Read the description text above. There exists a hack that abuses grouping for that purpose, though:
http://bitbucket.org/jinliu/smooth-tasks/overview/
(I think you cant use any other grouping features when using this.)

Hi panzi,

I added primitive support for launchers to Smooth Tasks. You can find the change in:

http://bitbucket.org/jinliu/smooth-tasks

Select the group mode "Pinned", then the context menu has a new item "Pin". Use it to pin a task to the bar. (Must have a .desktop file the same name as the window class.)

Hope you can merge this into your code. :-)

This is a great applet. Thanks for the hard work!

I do have one request. I don't know if it is even possible, not to mention feasible, but if it is I think it would be really useful. The idea is that, as an additional middle-click option, middle-clicking on a group of tasks displays all the windows in that group using the "present windows" kwin effect.

The normal task manager does this, the effect is triggered by ctrl+left click, but I think triggering it using the middle click would be better since it doesn't involve the keyboard. See below for a description of the implementation in the default task manager:
http://www.notmart.org/index.php/Software/Plasma_and_KWin

A related question: does smooth tasks implement this effect at all? ctrl+click does not seem to work for me with smooth tasks, so I was wondering if it was triggered in some other way, or not at all.

I tried both.
using default "plasma" tooltips, i've the same smoothness i've using the default task manager.
Changing animation speed/cpu usage under fine tuning, doesn't disable crossfading.

The Animation speed option in Desktop effects didn't helped?
Eeepc 1005ha has the same graphic card that I use and I have no problem with this. It can be problem with drivers.

What about cpu speed?
n280 is not so fast ;)
Also, I've no problem running compiz or kwin compositing effects, and 'jerkyness' comes at the same time the crossfading kicks in.
Video drivers are latest xf86-video-intel-2.10.0, they works quite well.

Hi, and thanks :)
Could it be possible to add an option to disable crossfade between thumbnails when mouse passes from a task entry to another?

Smooth Task on an eeepc 1005ha is not so smooth, and i think that is the cause, because default kde 4 task manager is smooth.

Report

gravy

There is a lot of places in KDE where it can be set
1) did you try to experiment with all the smoothtasks settings (for example use the original tooltips?)
2) system settings/Desktop/Animation speed
3) system settings/Appearance/Style/Fine Tuning/Graphical effects/(Use low CPU)
the last option is maybe only in KDE4.4

Panzi wrote that the animations now are only a workaround. In future it (maybe) will be reworked to the Kinetics.

Thank you for your effort, I see that you have implemented my feature request about option for disabling scroll task switch:)

The new task manager in KDE 4.4 is a bit buggy and tends to mix task items, but by using your smooth tasks and plasma tooltip style i get the best of both worlds (minimize maximze by clicking on the preview).
Middle click to close a group of tasks is one of the best features. Great job:)

Report

mirzaD

I just thought of two features thaw would be great to see in smooth tasks:

- enable smooth tasks to have the same launch feedback like regular task manager

- when showing smooth tool tip style please consider adding option for enabling the tool tip to stay visible(not to close) after (for example) closing one window from the group (just like plasma tool tip, you can click on window to maximize-minimize it several time)

If I understand you right I already do that. Only if the group gets unfolded (because there is enough room in the taskbar now or only one window remains) the tooltip is hidden, and that is because libtaskmanager tells me that the group was removed. So I can't display any tooltip now then, because the hover item was removed.
