Smooth Tasks
Plasma 4 Extensions
Score 93%
Description:

This is a fork of mbaszczewskis STasks plasmoid. For the original STasks code go there:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/STasks?content=99739

This taskbar replacement has window peeking similar to Windows 7 when you use the kwin 'highlight window' effect. Even if this effect is not used you can click the tooltip in order to activate the corresponding window.

About Launcher Support, Grouping and Sorting:
A feature often requested in the comments is support for launchers and a more comprehensive context menu. Because the information about which task items there are, their grouping, sorting and state (minimized, demands attention, is active, ...) and even their context menu is all provided by libtaskmanager, such feature requests should be directed to kdelibs. I wrote a wishlist entry in the kde bugtracker for these features: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=207902 If you want this feature vote for this wish.

Update:
Launcher support exists in KDE 4.6. I will incorporate this feature once KDE 4.6 is available in Fedora (and I have time).

Update 2:
I pulled all changes made by flupp and jimi312, which amongst other things add launcher support. You can download the most recent source directly from the mercurial repository:
https://bitbucket.org/panzi/smooth-tasks/get/tip.tar.bz2

However, because I experienced some bugs with the launcher support (sometimes they are shown when the associated app is running and sometimes they are not shown when the associated app is not running) I did not make a new release yet. If I can find the bugs in a few hours tomorrow (2nd Apr 2011) or flupp/jimi312 fix them I will make a new release. I don't know how much time I have to work on Smooth Tasks. :/

Update 3:
The mentioned bugs concerning launchers seem also to be present with KDE's original taskbar, so I think the bug lies in libtaskmanager and not in Smooth Tasks.

Bugreports and Wishes:
http://bitbucket.org/panzi/smooth-tasks/issues/

Packages:
Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora have official packages.

Fedora:
sudo yum install kde-plasma-smooth-tasks

And to get meaningful backtraces:
sudo debuginfo-install kde-plasma-smooth-tasks

Note: I didn't check the validity of any of these packages!

Poll: Which Layout should stay?
I have created a poll about which of the various layouts supported by Smooth Tasks should be kept and which I can drop:
http://twtpoll.com/dm5m96

Please participate in this poll so I know whether I have to bother with supporting all of the currently provided layouts. In case you do not use multiple rows please choose the first option. In this case most layouts should look the same anyway.

Sorry,
so what should i do to avoid Plasma from crashing at the startup? I installed the plasmoid from the GUI, so I dont know how to remove it since i do not have access to the GUI anymore. Thanks

Plasma keeps crashing here as well. I've installed the package through the samrog ppa and have been able to place it in the panel.

But as soon as I want to edit its preferences or open an application (and actually use smooth task) plasma crashes and does not restart itself.

Same problem for me: kubuntu 9.10 with KDE 4.4.
Plasma crashes as soon as I open an application.

If you are using a deb from my PPA (PPA for Rog131):

KDE packages are build against (as said in the PPA description):
- Karmic KDE 4.3
- Lucid KDE 4.4

In the past it has been a bad idea to mix diffrent plasmoid versions - they may or may not work.

Here the smooth tasks wip 2010-02-13 is working fine when the plasmoid is build against correct KDE version.

Removing the wrong version (with the apt-get):

Press Alt+F2, Krunner should start - type: konsole - konsole should start.

Konsole: sudo apt-get purge plasma-widget-smooth-tasks.

Log out - log in.

There are still markings in the plasma configuration files ~/.kde/share/config/plasma*.

If you right click the "Missing plasmoid" icon you could remove it.

From what gui? I only provide a source package. I don't even know how to install my applet using a gui. When you compile it from source, run "sudo make uninstall" in the build directory to uninstall it.

Option "Only show tasks from the current desktop" seems to be broken in KDE 4.4.

If i have this option enabled then new tasks started on desktop 2,3,4 won't show on the taskbar until i switch desktop to another one and then switch back to previous desktop. As an example:
1. I switch to desktop 2 and start kmail.
2. Kmail appears on desktop 2 but there is no task on the task manager.
3. I switch to desktop 3 and then switch back to desktop 2.
4. Now kmail task is present on the taskbar.

This behaviour happens only on desktops 2,3,4. Desktop 1 seems to work correctly.

I use KDE 4.4+Qt 4.6.1 and smooth tasks wip-2009-02-13.

I think it would look much better if you change lights to not react on mousePos.y.

I've changed sources, and IMHO it looks better now. (Need to say I don't know C++ at all, but I hope I'll understand idea).
Lines 85-106 from Light.cpp

case AttentionAnimation:
x = drawRect.left() + width * 0.5;
y = drawRect.top() + height;
size = size * 2.0 *
(m_progress < 0.5 ? (m_progress * 0.5 + 0.5) : (1 - m_progress / 2));
break;
case NoAnimation:
if (isRotated) {
x = m_item->size().height() - mousePos.y();
y = mousePos.x();
}
else {
x = mousePos.x();
y = drawRect.top() + height;
}
// y = drawRect.top() + height * 1.10;
width *= 2.0;
height *= 2.0;
break;
default:
return;
}

flupps fork/branch has added this as option:
http://bitbucket.org/flupp/smooth-tasks-fork/overview/

I like the current behaviour. What you say was the original STask behaviour but I got requests to change it to the current one. When/if I merge flupp this option will reappear. Currently you can compile it yourself with your said changes.

P.S. Sorry for multi posting, That was something wrong with my connection/browser.

I also prefer the glow from bottom like the original STasks.

Can't there simply be an option to decide whether the glow effect should read the mouse pointer position or not?

Report

tbaher

I like this a lot.
It looks more like Windows 7 but I'm not sure about the blinking when it is launching a task and waiting for it to be launched (e.g. pidgin has this)

It now blinks in the bottom instead of in the center or whatever.

Is that intentional?

This is a screenshot with the code above

http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/4069/snapshot3.png

Here is what it looks like with the original code

Or with just changing the "attention" y back

http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/3592/snapshot4d.png

I prefer the centered light for attention with the bottom light for mouse-position
