Hi Rohitthakar!

To install the theme, just ...

1) Extract the files on a folder (double-clicking on the file and copying them to a temporary folder should do it).
2) Go on the "KDE Configuration Center" : there is a shortcut on the KDE menu.
3) On the left hand list, select "Look and themes" then "Theme Manager".
4) Click on the "Install new theme" and browse and select the "kde_xp.kth". Just select it on the middle list and that's it!

As said the author, you MIGHT need to :

1) Select Theme Manager and then kde_xp in the theme list. Click on Apply.
2) Select Window Decoration and then IceWM in the list.
3) Select the Configure tab and then kde_xp in the list. Click on Apply.
4) Select Style and then kde_xp in the theme list. Click on Apply.

Hope it works for you as it worked for me.

@Speleoalex : Nice work!

@Stepee : Such styles are useful to accustom people to use Linux whithout loosing their window$ habits.

See you.

Seems like there are some problems with execution in the scripts:
style-install.sh
theme-install-kde.sh

They should be "green" when listing in konsole. I solved with chmod u+x style-install.sh and chmod u+x theme-install-kde.sh also.

Just one question... Why use IceWM window manager?. I think redmon goes more with this Windo$ Theme.

Thanks a lot for sharing this. I think it's very useful to "smooth" the transition to linux.

Win XP crap for KDE? Why?

Report

To make you ask stupid questions.

If you don't want it, don't download it. It's possible that, god forbid, someone might want their KDE desktop to look like Windows XP. Those people can use this theme, while everyone else can simply NOT use this theme.

I don't think that it's so much the looks that make people dislike WinXP.

Well, this theme deleted default bar.png and replaced it with it's own, bright blue one.
.../kstyle/themes/original/wallpapers/panel/bar.png

As I am n00b in Linux, I don't know how to get the original back :o\

Hello All,

I tried to install the RPM on my Fedora 5 for this but it did not show up in my KDE Theme manager.

Has anyone gotten this to work?

Please tell me how you did it.

Thanks,
Lonnie

It is just what i wanted for my linux-free dad. but how do you get the taskbar and start button to look like xp?

Report

To make KDE start menu look like Windows, use kbfx, and the themes on this website (do a search for kbfx) The size of the taskbar adjusts automatically after setting up kbfx.

Oh! And one more thing, after kbfx install, you enable it by using the right mouse button on the taskbar and selecting add applet to panel. Pretty easy, and kbfx has cool animation also!

Nice theme. I'm going to find it useful. I'm trying to make a boot disk (like demolinux and such) that boots linux at a generic windows terminal, without being obvious about it. We have a lot of computer labs at my university...

Very nice. I bet this would fool anyone at school even under a fair amount of scrutiny. Now, as for what to do with it...

I personally like the KDE basic themes myself compared to XP. However, just because YOU don't like it doesn't mean it is useless. I use this theme on a regular basis when I set up a computer for first time Linux users who will likely have a tough time with something different but can't affort MS products. It helps smooth out the learning curve for first timers.

Personally, I actually agree with the first poster in spirit, but not in words or lack of tact.

Content-wise, I hate the XP layout. I also will mention that I dislike KDE, being a gnome user... Granted, I don't use linux to not be affronted with the windows UI, but for other reasons instead, I still find emulations of windows on *nix to be... funny...

That being said, however, graphically the theme is layed out well, and has shown a lot of work going into it. For those who actually like the XP look and feel, aside from a good psychologist recommendation, I actually would recommend this theme to them to make them feel more "at home" with their desktop. Very nice job indeed. When critiquing art, the choice of subject is at the discretion of the artist, and one may really only judge based on how well the essence of the origional is captured... As such I will extend my hand and say "Well done".
