You might want to double-check your imports in this script; I had to add QCursor to the list imported from QtGui for it to run. - Feb 14 2012

I'm afraid I don't know what the problem could be. Those errors always come up, whether it works or no.

I'll try on a couple of my other machines, to see if I can get it to fail for me. Otherwise I don't have much hope of debugging it. - Mar 16 2011
It shouldn't require anything special; do you have the plasma-scriptengine-python package installed? Do other python plasma applets work?

Also, can you post the output of "plasmoidviewer textlaunch" from a konsole? - Mar 16 2011
I'm currently using it it kde 4.6.1; can you give me some more details? Do you have the necessary scriptengines installed? What distro? - Mar 13 2011
Thanks again. I merged your code and released a new plasmoid package. - Nov 15 2010
Looks like github's little crash today lost your request. Can you resubmit it? - Nov 14 2010
Cool! Looks like github is having some trouble today, though; Hopefully your request will still be there when it comes back online! - Nov 14 2010
Thanks for fixing this! I normally code kde/qt stuff by hand, but I tried designer when I made the dialogs and I couldn't figure out how to make the widget expand.

I just created a github repo for this project, but I am a total git newbie; maybe you can merge your code there? If not I'll try to figure it out when I have some free time.

My tests confirm that some environment variables are not set in whatever environment the plasmoid runs in. I don't know why, but if I get some time I'll look into it.

In the meantime, you can set important variables in the command itself as a workaround, eg.

LANG=it_IT.UTF-8 chromium

I don't know if it can be done with plasma toolbuttons (which is what I'm using for the buttons). They seem to be either icons or text, but not both.

Note also that adding this feature would break everyone's prior configurations, as I discovered when I added icon capabilities to KliqTune. It has to do with the way the launchers are stored.

If I find a way to actually do it, I'll consider it. - Mar 30 2010
Both will be in 0.3; thanks for the suggestions. - Sep 28 2009
I'll look into it. - Sep 28 2009
I'll look into the kickoff-favorites thing.

The problem with button size is that, as I found after starting this plasmoid, the appearance of plasma styled widgets is not so easy to manipulate. - Sep 28 2009
Currently there is a bug that requires you to fill in all three fields (including tooltip) or it won't add the button. I will fix this in the next release. - Sep 12 2009

I think I tried to do that at one point, because I have had similar problems.

I don't think phonon exposes this capability, though; at least, I couldn't find it. - Feb 04 2011

As far as I know there is no requirement for pulseaudio. KliqTune talks to phonon, so if phonon is working you should have sound. If not, the trouble is elsewhere. - Feb 01 2011
Of course, I say this, and 15 minutes later I have it figured out.

I give you KliqTune 0.4.1... - Mar 28 2010
I agree, but I haven't figured out how to keep them alive longer. If I do figure it out, I'll definitely change that. - Mar 28 2010
Thanks, glad you like it!

In 0.4 the tooltip of the active button will show all the metadata (artist, song, etc). The code is already in place, just teasing out a few bugs before release.

I did indeed use phonon, it's quite easy and powerful as I've discovered. - Mar 15 2010
Icons added in 0.3. Enjoy! - Mar 13 2010
Sounds like fun. I'll look into it. - Feb 20 2010
I hadn't looked at that one. Mostly I wrote this for my own needs, but I'm happy to share. - Feb 06 2010

KDE 4.4.3 on Kubuntu Lucid. - May 15 2010
Thanks; I recompiled with the new archive. Now I have the option to enable Knotify, which I did.

Unfortunately, I still don't get any notifications. :(

- May 11 2010
I compiled it and restarted plasma, but I'm not getting the notifications.

I double checked that the old plasmoid was uninstalled, and the correct .so is being used.

I'm on Kubuntu Lucid with KDE 4.4.3.

Anything I can check? - May 07 2010
Nevermind, that's what you did. Thanks!

I'm an idiot. - May 07 2010
Hi, I've tried to apply this patch but I've never gotten the result to compile. Since the original plasmoid is GPL, and the author has stated that he has no immediate plans to work on it, would you be willing to release a full patched version of GX Mail?

Users everywhere would be grateful. - May 07 2010

i just compiled this and installed it on my system. It does not seem to work with Aurorae window decorations. With other window decorators it works fine (crystal, keramic, etc), but not aurorae.

Hi, I'm sure you are busy so I hope I'm not a pest. Are you planning on releasing a new version fairly soon? Just curious, since you had indicated a new release was imminent a couple months ago.

Thanks for this great plasma widget! - Feb 17 2010

Well, don't stretch yourself on my account, though having dual monitors is nice. :-)

I can try looking around in the code some to see about extending the width of the image, though I'm more of a python guy; c++ kind of gets my head spinning. - Jan 20 2010
I tried this with my dual monitor setup; when I go off one monitor onto the other, I get a nasty white bar on the near side of the first monitor because it goes past the boundary of the picture.

I'm guessing this can't span both monitors, since plasma regards each monitor as a separate activity; but it would be good if it allowed for two things:
- Very wide pictures (I tried to use one but it cropped the picture)
- manually setting the center or default position.

The animation could be smoother, but I've yet to see a smoothly animated plasma wallpaper so that may be a plasma thing. - Jan 20 2010

wait, never mind; adding it to line 178 as well fixes unicode for the dict client backend.

Unicode still crashes the python-dict backend, it looks like a shortcoming of the library itself. - Dec 25 2009
Thanks for the suggestion, I tried this but it doesn't seem to fix the problem. Did it work for you? The plasmoid still give me:

UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'\xdf' in position 14: ordinal not in range(128)

Not sure where or why this is happening. - Dec 25 2009
What backend are you using? - Sep 06 2009
Thanks for the info, I'll consider it. - Aug 31 2009
erm... maybe. I'll have to look into that. I'm pretty new to this API. - Aug 23 2009
Ok, actually after some digging I managed to get your function ported to python, and (yay!) it works! ... sort of.

It only gives focus to the widget if I click the area AROUND the combobox widget. If there was a signal that I could connect when the combobox is clicked, that would work. But according to all I can find, there isn't :-(.

Short of subclassing QlineEdit and overriding its mousePressEvent, I'm not sure what else to do. - Aug 23 2009
Thanks. I checked it out, and read your post to plasma-devel, but I am not sure I get what's going on yet.

Where does the scene() method come from (what class/library)? I couldn't find it in the API reference. - Aug 22 2009
Thanks! I looked a lot at the RunCommand source, but I couldn't figure out exactly what what going on there. Did you just basically have to custom-build the combobox?

I'll dig into it a little more and see if I can understand it. - Aug 22 2009

The problem has gone away after subsequent KDE updates, so it must have been a KDE issue. - Nov 30 2009
Love this plasmoid, but it's crashing plasma for me in Kubuntu 9.10 any time I use synaptic and cause synaptic to open a dialog.

The error in the backtrace looks like this:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
TaskManager::Task::icon (this=0x0, width=32, height=32, allowResize=true) at ../../../libs/taskmanager/task.cpp:407
407 ../../../libs/taskmanager/task.cpp: No such file or directory.
in ../../../libs/taskmanager/task.cpp

I narrowed it down to daisy after trial and error, even with the task manager disabled having daisy running on my desktop results in this crash. - Nov 02 2009
Actually it happens with any program that exits with an error code. For instance, it happens with my nxclient launcher if I cancel out of the login box (exit status 1).

I looked at your code, but it looks like the problem is krun::runCommand(). The documentation says it uses the executable name for an error message if the command can't be run, apparently exiting with an error code triggers the message. I don't know if there's a way around that. - Jul 27 2009

This theme is great! I use neon and had to hack together my own unsatisfying neon-like theme, this one will replace it pronto!

Just one small thing: can you add a button for "keep above"? No aurorae themes I can find have this button, but it is supposed to be possible and I use this function all the time. - Oct 09 2009

I understand that; as I'm finding out quickly, doing much with plasmoid appearance is a tricky business. Hopefully it will be easier in the future, it sounds like the plasma devs are going to make some changes to the way plasma deals with customizations on nativeWidget() objects.

Oh BTW, the spacer thing was user error on my part; I was using an old, pre-4.2 beta version of panel spacer and didn't realize it. - Sep 14 2009
This is nice but I have few small issues:

- Text is always black, which makes it invisible with my plasma theme. Needs to follow theme text color or have configurable color.

- Right-click context menu appears below the mouse cursor. This makes it not very useful when the widget is in a bottom panel.

- Can't resize it when I put it in the panel, and panel spacers can't shrink it, so it's taking up about 2/3 of my panel. Not a big deal, but annoying.

Thanks! - Aug 17 2009
