Description:

Oxygen-Molecule is a theme for GTK+ applications to provide a uniform look when used under the KDE 4.4 desktop environment. It was originally based on the kde4.2-oxygen (modified) 0.3 GTK theme by Dennis Schmitz (which was itself based on work originally by Kim Kahns) (url: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/kde4.2-oxygen+(modified)?content=99926)

On top of the original theme, I have made the following changes:
- changed colors to match default KDE 4.4 color scheme, including hue adjustment of all pixmaps
- reworked all of the pixmaps and changed measurements for improved visual appearance
- created new spinner buttons, since the original spinners often looked mismatched with the surrounding pixmaps
- linked the GTK theme with the Oxygen icon set (thank you Craig Drummond for showing me how to do this).

In addition, beginning with version 3.1, Oxygen-Molecule features a “flat” mode which disables the background gradient. Some GTK+ apps don't play nice with the background gradient used in the default Oxygen-Molecule theme, causing patches of the wrong shade of grey to appear in the background. Oxygen-Molecule's flat mode solves this problem, and can be enabled on a per-application basis.

Additional documentation and installation instructions are included in the download.

I am also providing my source graphics files (created with GIMP) for anyone who wants to try making their own color variants.

Notes for the source graphics files: layer names in square brackets indicate the color from the KDE color scheme. There are many graphics files missing... for these, you will just need to edit the theme PNG files (not included in source graphics download--get them from the theme).

Good luck!

7-29-2010: Added COPYING file to archive.

3.2:
- Redesigned color scheme to use less extreme shading. This looks better for both KDE and GTK+ apps, in my opinion, and also helps everything to blend a little better. For users upgrading from version 3.1 or earlier, please set your KDE color shading to 50% (see step 7 in the installation guide).
- Tweaked menubar gradient to look better for wider windows, but at the expense of the appearance of narrower ones. My reasoning is that most people use their GTK apps either fullscreen or as large windows.
- Adjusted the size of the active menubar item selector, and further fine-tuned the color of the menu item selector.

3.1:
- Added new "flat" mode, which removes the background gradient from windows and tabs.
- Fixed the tree view colors.
- Increased spacing between tabs to better match the Oxygen theme.

3.0:
- Updated theme to match KDE 4.4 widgets and shading.
- Almost all pixmaps were completely redone.
- Countless tweaks, including thinner buttons and entry boxes, new spinner buttons and better tab spacing.
- Removed unnecessary clearlooks reference.
- Changed theme install location in documentation from /usr/share/themes to /usr/local/share/themes.

Further changes are listed in the documentation included with the theme.

I'm trying out KDE SC 4.4 RC1 right now and liking it. However, the Oxygen theme has changed quite a bit in this release. I likely won't have the time anytime soon to make Oxygen-Molecule look like the new Oxygen theme, so in the meantime, simply use the Nitrogen theme instead, which is basically the old Oxygen.

One thing you'll want to do with the window decoration (whether you use the Oxygen or the Nitrogen window decoration): go to the "Window-Specific" tab in the system settings (Appearance -> Windows) and uncheck the box for "Window Class Name (Firefox)(Thunderbird)(Gimp)".

great theme!
I installed from arch's aur but i have a problem my gtk apps do not have the kde color scheme (I'm using a green color scheme) after I installed the package it said that i had to uncheck apply kde colors to non-kde apps does this mean that this theme only supports oxygen default color theme?

Yes, the GTK theme currently only works with one color setup. Craig Drummond has been working on a recolorable pixbuf engine, but it doesn't work quite well enough yet for what I need it to do.

I switched from gtk-engines-qt4 because I got tired of all of its display glitches and the bug where Firefox would not exit cleanly. I must say, Oxygen Molecule is the truest GTK clone of Oxygen I have found. (It's still a shame that nobody actually ports the Oxygen drawing functions over to make a new GTK engine. Using pixmaps isn't too efficient.)

I only have one gripe, which I fixed for myself, but I'll mention it here in hopes of it being fixed in the official package. The TreeView's text color is wrong. It uses #444444 for the unselected text color. That color isn't used anywhere else, and it's wrong. It should be #141312 like the others.

Thanks for letting me know. This has been fixed in version 2.2.

If you look at inactive firefox buttons on your preview picture, those buttons contain not so pretty dots.. Can you do it like in current QTcurve, that inactive buttons will have normal, gray icons without those dots? Maybe port to murrine engine instead of pixbuf would be better..

There is a patched version of pixbuf that fixes this. Here is the link: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/gtk2-engine-pixbuf+%28Patched%29?content=77783

The current gtk-qt theme which is usually shipped by distributions to make gtk look like qt just does not work for oxygen. Full of glitches.
Your port is _sooo much_ better.

this is (IMHO) the best oxygen gtk theme I know. The fact that you use valid/polished alternatives where you could not mimic qt oxygen exactly (e.g. for comboboxes) is really appreciated.

Maybe you could join the oxygen team to keep in touch with changes we're doing,
and ultimately one could ship your theme along with qt oxygen :)

Try #oxygen on IRC !

Just made the switch from Arch to Suse. Now I think I have a problem (or my memory is wrong): The menus became more ugly and I think the color difference between GTK and the window decoration. Can someone confirm that this is not the normal look?

http://img190.imageshack.us/i/bildschirmfoto1u.png/

Especially those menu seperators? In fact I don't really find a pixbuf gtk package in Suses repositories. Installed some other pixbuf packages but the result is this. And most things really look nice.

Does somebody have an idea?

The separators in that screenshot don't look right. As for the colors, try importing the color scheme included with the Oxygen-Molecule theme, and see if that matches the window frame to the contents better.

Looks like the colors match better now. Thanks a lot. But there are still those ugly seperators. Does somebody know how this happens? And what to do? I really love this theme - but that is defenitly annoying...

Just writing to let you know that as of Oxygen-Molecule version 2.2, checkboxes in Gmail (and other websites) have been made smaller, and now look much better.

hey guys, firefox uses the checkboxes stored in "gtk-2.0 > Check-Radio" folder. I had the same issues in gmail so i scaled them in my installation a bit. You can see how it looks here:

http://imagebin.ca/view/YGZv6N.html

But notice. After changing the four necessary images, all checkboxes in gtk apps are changed. You can see that in the firefox config dialog in the screenshot.

hope that help.

Chak-Radio folder has 6 images that looks like gmail checkbox! You say that changing 4 is enough! What 4?

Report

I'm using a different version of this gtk theme (an older version with my own colors) so its possible that this theme includes more then 4 Images to edit. I think you have to edit all of them (six in your case). Give it a try but make a backup of your file first.

good luck

Making the checkboxes smaller will make them inconsistent with the KDE checkboxes. But, if you want to do that, I can send you the GIMP files I used for creating those pixmaps. That will make it easier to change the size.
