Hey guys, I made a new version of this cool Screenlet.
It does a much better job at resizing images for scales > 100%, resulting in much higher quality, and adds the ability to center images that have 'Aspect ratio maintained'.
Also, it allows you to maximize a picture to the frame by cropping the image, instead of distorting it(inspired by SlideshowPlus).

It's THE screenlet I use / enjoy the more often. However I miss the lack of reactivity of vista's sreenlet (how my god what am I saying!) to open these picture. And I would sugest an other option : displaying the picture with the right orientation according to the exifs. I display picture of my camera, ubuntu diplays them well, but sadly this screenlet don't show them in the right orientation.
After correcting the first thing and adding the second option it would be perfect.

I'm running Slideshow version 1.1 on Screenlets 0.1.2. The context menu takes several seconds to become available under most circumstances. I did not experience this problem when using earlier versions.

Also, is there a way to change which image viewer is used when selecting the "open image" option? It doesn't follow the Nautilus "open with" settings. Eye of Gnome is really slow and I'd like to use GThumb instead. Thanks!

The image viewer issue can be resolved by changing the gnome-open command found in the SlideshowScreenlet.py file to gvfs-open. Apparently gnome-open is undocumented and may be deprecated. See here for details:

The picture managed to fit the frame after I disable the 'keep aspect ratio' but the picture is displayed kinda weird without the option being turned on.

Why is it have black bar (which the button is being displayed when I hover my mouse over) below the picture? How can I disable it?

I set the directory folder for my pictures in the slideshow screenlet to "$HOME/My Pictures". There are about 10 pictures in this directory, but 100's more in sub-directories of this folder i.e. "$HOME/My Pictures/Holiday Snaps". However, the slideshow screenlet only loops round those pictures in the "My Pictures" folder.

Is this a bug?

update: Although the option does not show on the "properties" menu, if you go to: "$HOME/.screenlets/Slideshow/SlideshowScreenlet.py"

and change:
"Recursive=False"

to

"Recursive=True"

Now it works.

Will it be possible to set the Flickr pictures to be set as Wallpaper?

Currently it says "Can only set Wallpaper to Local images.

It will be great if this can be done.

I've found this screenlet recently and I liked it.
However, it haven't some simple features I need. So, I modify it a little (based on version 1.0):
- image centering (always on)
- scale images by cairo and not by Image module
- hence, it looks very pretty now when using entire screenlet sizing (image quality don't get lower)
- removed unevident options "Image Scale", "Image offset X/Y". Those replaced by clear options "Top/Bottom/Left/Right borders of the slide" (in pixels)
- immediate response to changing of those options and "Keep aspect ratio" option.

Now, this screenlet is usable for me. ;)

You can take it here (there are modified and original source code and diff file):
http://www.lerlan.ru/simba/temp/SlideshowSimbaMod.tar.bz2

I suppose later this changes will be merged by Whise.

Where can I found "the screenlet bzr core package"? As i've mention in previous comment, I've downloaded some "screenlets 0.0.13" package, but it contains only 0.8 version of this plugin.

I have not found the abovementioned core package, so I downloaded "the enhancements" by Lion-Simba, as I wanted the pictures were always centered.
In the source code both left and right borders are assigned to the same variable self.b_left (line 121). Anyway I like very much both the original idea and the enhancements.
In the Mirror theme I would suggest to use a panel instead of a frame, in that case there is no holes between picture and the frame.

I've donloaded screenlets-0.0.13 (Ubuntu repository rev 174) from http://ppa.launchpad.net/gilir/ubuntu using the package manager.
But there is still version 0.8 of this screenlet.

:| i already have the Python modules, i found the solution though, when i ran it in console, i got an error message saying that it cant find Linsta theme, so i navigated inside the screenlet folders to the theme folder and renamed the "mirror" theme to "linsta" and IT WORKS :D

thanks for the update, love this screenlet :D

Looks like this is the kind of applet I was looking for, however in my case it's not working.

I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 in which case Screenlets is installed in /usr/share/screenlets instead of the path that the author indicates.
Probably this is the reason it's not working. Is there a way to fix this?

Report

Ok, after installing Python Image the images show, however, they don't stay in the frame.

If the picture has a different size/aspect than the frame it just overlaps it. It would make more sense if it were to clip the picture, so nothing is displayed outside of the frame. Why otherwise use a frame in the first place?

Just some constructive comments for the developer...

After checking things a bit more, it turns out that it is loading the pictures, but just not displaying them in the frame.

If I select <Open Image> it does open one of the images in my pictures folder.

The odd thing is, in the frame itself it just gives me a black screen. What could be the reason it is not displaying the images in the frame, while it does seem to find them?
