you're right. I like xfwm better in that department as it's easier to change the button layout with that window manager.
Actually, the window buttons don't switch automatically. You have to go into gconf (enter "gconf-editor" into a terminal), go to apps/metacity/general, and change "menu:minimize,maximize,close" to "close,minimize,maximize:menu" or something similar.
