Description:
Plymouth Theme based of the Classic SG1 Macgyver Stargate. Modelled by myself and rendered in Blender 3D, with a bit Gimp action for post work. Idea came from someone with a wish on W8.. cheers

Read the README for simple instructions on installing.

Been tested on Nvidia (usual ratio issue) and intel cards.

ROFL! It's great, but it's a pitty - only 3 chevrons. :/ Great work

The theme background looks grey on my desktop. I'm using nvidia.

unfortunately the time its on screen for is related to how long it takes your machine to boot.. obviously very fast machine ;)

Hi I really like this theme. But I'd like to extend the time of the animation. How can I do? I need to change the file "Stargate.script" in / lib / plymouth / themes / Stargate. But what values should I change? For example if I wanted to double the time?

I'd like it better if the background was something like black. Ditch the gray. It detracts from your creation. BTW, I'm a big StarGate fan. Sucks that I don't get to watch it anymore. Curse you, SyFy Network! Curse you!!! ;). Later...

Great idea, but where is the theme? I followed the link, clicked the download button at the bottom of the page, and it says the link is broken.

I watched the video and this is how it looks on my computer. Is it my imagination or does it kinda look low-res and rough-looking?

zeckman1138

Looks like you're going to have to let this go Sekter7... The video is a screen grab via plymouthx11... for testing purposes it displays on the desktop at a much lower res than the actual boot up... and then gets even lower when knocking it back out as an flv.. use some logic dude.. open one of the images from tar.gz and look at how it displays on your desktop... you'll notice the height to be 910 pixels.. Then do a little more reading on plymouth and ATI cards.. So sorry that it looks rough for you.. looks great on all machines I've tested on.

heh.. This was just idea, but thnx for Your work :)

the images (Gate Ring, Gate Spinner, etc.) as they are displayed on my computer are extremely low resolution and look very rough-hewn. Is there some way I can increase the resolution or can you supply images for higher resolution monitors such as mine (1920x1200). By the way, I changed the background image to black which looks better on my Divinorum-themed Ubuntu. Thanks for sharing!

zeckman1138

Not surprised in the slightest it looks rough at that resolution. Really was intended for the likes of 1280 x 1024 /VGA"795" modes. Can't see much reason to run a boot screen at such a high res. I'll think about putting the Blender project file up at some point so you and others can have a go.

zeckman1138

Just to double check.. You are using it as boot screen and not a wallpaper right?

Hi, thanks for your quick response. Yes, I am using this as it was intended, as a splash screen. I installed it according to the instructions in the readme file. I am using Ubuntu 10.04. My Ubuntu desktop is at 1920x1200 but I do not know what the resolution is for the splash screen. I have been checking on splash screen problems and it appears that there is a bug in Ubuntu 10.04 that causes Plymouth splash screens to be low-res (not just yours) if the ATI or Nvidia drivers are enabled. (I have the ATI drivers enabled.) I have found some information of fixing Plymouth's resolution here: http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-Fix-the-Big-and-Ugly-Plymouth-Logo-in-Ubuntu-10-04-140810.shtml So it looks like this is a general problem and not a problem with your splash. If you have any other ideas about this I would like to hear them. By the way, have you thought about making the "Puddle" ripple like it does on the Stargate shows? That would be very cool but probably very difficult to implement. Thanks again for sharing!

Wish I could suggest what to do. I haven't had an ATI card in a Linux box for some years now due to having various issues with the fglrx drivers 3D and video playback. Promptly opened my wallet to NVidia and haven't looked back. Hoping an ATI user downloading this theme may be kind enough to help out

sekter7

According to everything I've read so far regarding this bug in Ubuntu 10.04 the low-res problem happens with any third-party video driver, ATI & Nvidia. If the video driver is switched back to the Ubuntu driver the problem goes away, but, of course, you lose other functions such as 3D acceleration. Thanks for your response.
