Human icons redesigned!

Erectus is a complete icon set for the Gnome desktop. It is inspired by Ubuntu Human icons. It contains some icons from the Elementary icon theme and various tango icons created by various artists.

Erectus icons are created by Jonian and Olibia.

Chromo-Erectus (Violet, blue, green, brown version) available here: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Chromo-Erectus?content=101194

Thanks man. You're being a bit harsh with the artwork team, but you're right.
The only good thing I have seen from the ubuntu community artwork team is Dust, New Wave an Breathe that shows promise.

Your theme is finally mature =D

I think a new gnome-do icon would be nice =)

Kudos to you!

Fantastic release! All the new icons look really smooth and "Human". I particularly fell in love with the emblems.

You might want to check for broken links, though. Some of them are hard links, and they look for the file in your desktop (/home/jonieno/Desktop/Έγγραφα/) rather than the current folder. You can probably fix this by creating links like this:

ln -s app.svg link_to_app.svg

I think the emblems will look good with gnome colors too. If you want, feel free to use them :)

No. I don't think it's a good idea. Gnome-Colors haves great emblems. Okay sorry :) ... it's because I don't like the style from original Human and what Erectus haves. A small circle with a exact mini-icon-message inside plus EyeCandy is nearly impossible. But yes, Erectus made it better than the original Human one, I think ... ;)

It'a matter of personal taste :)
I like the ubuntu human emblems but I don't like their color and the glossy effect.

As for the small sizes of Breathe icon set, my bigest complain is the folder icon. It's so good on the big size but on the small size that 1px blury outline makes it look bad.

The folder is already not the final ;) The discussion reborn again and again ...

Just two quick things I forgot:

-There are no links for audio-x-generic and package-x-generic in mimetypes, perhaps you can just copy them over from gnome-icon-theme.

-You can greatly reduce the filesize of Ubuntu's notification-* icons from 5.4 MB to 685 KB by simply saving them in a new inkscape file, or using the ones in latest gnome-colors that already have these optimizations.

Thanks for the good comments and for your help. I'll fix the issues as soon as posible.

By the way, I really like your new icons (monitor, devices...). What I think is missing is a new trash icon.

Thanks again for the help.

Thanks for the compliments on the devices, although all the credit should go to Lapo Calamandrei, whose work in the new gnome-icon-theme is the base for all the new icons.

As for the emblems, I'd love to use them, but gnome-colors is being submitted to Debian and apparently they accept cc-by-sa but not cc-by-nc. That's pretty much the reason I had to remove your beautiful printer icons from the set and add new ones :O

The printer icon was a slightly modified version from tangerine, so it falls at tango/tango based icons, so it is cc-by-sa. But no need to use it, your new printer icon is great!

If that's the case, I might change the license. Does cc-by-sa prevent commercial use of the icons?

I'm not really sure. The ones that helped me get through all the licensing woes were Benjamin Drung and Andrew Starr-Bochicchio. From a quick wikipedia search, this is what I found:

* CC-by-nc-sa, which requires non-commercial use only is share-alike but is not free content, and thus cannot be considered a Copyleft license.

I may be wrong, though, but from my understanding - Debian is accepting GPL and CC-BY-SA 3.0.

Perhaps you should make an entry in Ubuntu's artwork wiki, if the artwork team likes it, they'll find a way to get it in somehow. I like Breathe, but Erectus feels much more Human, is more consistent with current GNOME, and feels more "complete"... So I'd love to see them in Appearance Preferences by default if it were up to me.

@ perfectska04:
I made for a short while a test with the hires-svg-icons from Breathe. Svg opened with Inkscape ... even rendered to png shows always the correct and true icon-aspect. In realy use I noticed missing blured-shadows or lines and/or moved layers (up/down), slightly moved objects, missing objects. I think that this is a bug in libsvg ... but I am not really sure.
Bug-report: I think I should take some researches before report something... ;)

@jonian
That would be nice, although they will probably opt for just Breathe, as to save space in the livecd for other stuff. Having gnome-colors/elementary/erectus in universe repos would probably be good enough for most people who just want things to simply work.

@schollidesign
Is the SVG bug you mentioned the one where GNOME cannot render "blur" at all? If so, I find that extremely annoying and limiting to artists... a link to the bug report would be nice!

jonian. I don't know you saw the source-files from Breathe? 128 is for scalable. 48-32-22-16 for rendered png's. The goal is to make the icons from 48-16 so good that no more handwork are needed. In my opinion it's going quite well and presentable. But for being perfect a slight handwork over them will be a *must*. ;)

Another problem is the libsvg-bug with scalable hires-icons and I like to repeat it always, because I want it's get finally fixed. :D Mhh, maybe I must do a bug-report!?

PD: I made a own new "Iconset" in Gnome-style and what's preserves my own gusts. I don't have the intention to make it very puplic - it's not necessary. But if you want try "Humanoid" on DA. ;)

Cheers

That's what I think too. Erectus, Gnome-Colors and Elementary can be preinstalled on ubuntu, just to give more choices to the users.
As for Breathe, it has some good icons but it is very far from complete and the existing icons need some work on the smaller sizes.
I checked out for the licenses and only gpl and cc-by-sa are accepted, as you said.

And the Tango/Tango based icons (not sure about Tangerine) are public domain now, so those shouldn't be an issue.

is there an easy way to avoid using the erectus app icons, such as the firefox, deluge one and so on. i prefer the original icons. as well as the icon by the applications menu

For the app icons you have to manually delete the icons.
As for the logo, I will upload shortly, as I said before, a package with icons for the most popular distros.
