How about instead of the checkerboard to make it transparent. Then the users background color(s) will be where the checkerboard is and you can choose color for your self.
Also, it would be awesome if it came it came in a more scalable or larger size.
My laptop display is 1680x1050
I guess I could do the transparent thing -- I've done it with other similar wallpapers. How about a transparent checkerboard? Also, I recently did a wallpaper similar to this one that you can use on your 1680x1050 display:

transparent checkerboard would be nice :-) What are you doing it in? inkscape?
the gimp
