Could you provide a URL as to where exactly in NASA did you get the star map. Also, did you get the actual star coordinates, or just a spherical/cylindrical texture map?
You should take a look at celestia, there are some pretty amazing extra texture packs which really bring a lot of detail, it even has some fancy atmosphere rendering stuff.

I didn't actually render the stars, I just used Gimp to combine my rendered image with the star background. I used their Hipparcos image. Sorta cheating, I guess. Some day I'll post something that is 100% rendered, hopefully.
