A better solution:
remove or comment the following lines:
style "silver-menubar" = "silver-default"
{
# bg[NORMAL] = "#f0f0f0"
bg_pixmap[NORMAL] = "menubar.png"
}
and toward the end of the file:
class "*MenuBar*" style "silver-menubar"
