Wish: Text for Icons on Kicker

Description:

I think it would be very nice to have text for icons on the kicker in the same as it is possible for toolbar icons. This would highly improve the usability for beginners and IMHO provides also a very nice eyecandy (which might look even better with a transparent kicker). I think, this might also be something that would set kicker one step ahead of similar panels of other desktops like Gnome, XfCE, OS X...

For toolbars you can select if you would like to display the text below or alongside of the icons.
That's exactly what I would also like for kicker.

See screenshot #2 for an example how this would look for text below and screenshot #3 for an example for text alongside icons.

Right, this is going to take a while longer - there is alot to do. I have had hardly no time this weekend, I would have liked to have done, but heh, such is life.

There will have to be several design decisions to make, I'd appreciate alittle approval on them?

- If the kicker is set to < Normal should the text automatically align to alongside?

- Should the font size change as the kicker get's smaller?

- The icon size will have to be smaller in order to include the text, is this acceptable or should the panel be made larger?

Although this makes sense, I think it would be better to let the user decide it manually. However at some time it will be impossible to display the text below the icons. Maybe if kicker is too small, remove the text.

No. But the size should be configurable.

I vote for resizing the icons instead of the panel.

Hey. How did you make this console in root window? I try to find out how can i do it but i couldn't. Can you tell me how you do that? :)

(1) Install Eterm (www.eterm.org)

(2) Configure sudo (/etc/sudoers) in such a way that you are not asked for a password, e.g. add the line:

yourusername ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL

(3) Launch the command below:

kstart --alldesktops --skiptaskbar --skippager --buttonbar 0 -- trans --scrollbar-type xterm --scrollbar-popup --foreground-color white --borderless -e sudo tail -f /var/log/messages

...since I'm away from my linux, but couldn't you do something like that in Karamba? console, that is...dunno.

Well... I use Eterm. The shadowed text makes it easy to read, independend from the background I use.

This should also be in Konsole. Well, you can vote for that on http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66856 ;-)

Until this is implemented, you can always use the ROX-Filer program to achieve the same results. See rox.sourceforge.net

I am not talking about toolbars (see my Screenshots and you will see that I already know that).

I am talking about the kicker. IMHO the Kicker is nothing else than a global toolbar. And therefore having text for application toolbars, but not for the kicker is inconsistent.

Maybe the karamba dudes can come up with something, if not in kicker itself ... for instance, having text with the OSX bar in karamba and making it optional will definitely put karamba OSX bar ahead of the real one :-)
