Well, I am working hard to finalize my design, I did read on the kopete website that they had no intention of making the interface "skinable" so I am a bit torn as to whether I should continue. However, what I will do is release the first mod once I have finished coding it as well as the contact listview update I created as well.

As for the windeco, if I get around to it I will, but I may also release the style that I have been developing as well. One thing at a time though.

So, I am back. Um was just wondering about this Kopete view plugin. Where is it and what technology does it use to create UIs like the one I modified.

wel I hope at least you can make your concept as a plugin :D

btw your earlier windec, why don't you release it? its nice and clean...

altough the suse windec available from this site might be slightly better. the problem with it is I can't do feature requests (i love to see the botom corners rounded, too)

same with linspire style - its nice, but i have some requests and no-one to send them too... (the checkboxes suck, the pressed scrollbar does not follow colors etc)

Kopete in KDE 3.4 is going to have a view plugin API. This means that third party developers will be able to write their own chat window modules to plug into Kopete. These modules could look like anything, including the one here.

Well the good news is that the chat window concept is in the hands of the kopete developers. Bad new is my hdd is about to die and I am trying desperately to get my data off :( Linux does not boot so all I can save is my important windows stuff. I am so fcuked. :(

As for the chat members etc comments, that's why i created the sidebar. For the wallpaper comment, as soon as I get my data off my hdd I will send you the link to it. I am on my other home pc.

are you planning on having the optio ofr either sidebar in some sort of .rc? that would be much nicer, seen as this sidebar is much more asthetically pleasing that KDE's.

i don't think it looks bad, but I have my current kopete window striped down to just show the text-input field and the history window above.

I think your chat window should only be integrated into kopete, if you can turn off ALL menubars, toolbars, status bars, "Send" button and the "To:" label.

Whoa :-) This is exactly the kind of improvement I've been waiting for a long time. I'd love to see KDE improve like this.

If you want your chat window merged into CVS (which seems a reasonable idea; it's getting a good response here), please email [email protected] or join #kopete on freenode so we can discuss it. Having it in CVS will mean that it's kept up-to-date with changes in Kopete's API (which are frequent right now).

I didn't found a better title, kopete chat window also lacks a very useful thing, an icon that shows when other people is writing (like in gaim) by now there is only text on the bottom status bar, that you hardly notice, It's a very little thing, but very useful IMHO

Actually, Kopete does have a function like that, problem is it's only visible with tabs shown, since what happens is that when someone types, the text on the tab turns bright green.

I didn't know about that because I don't use tabs, but an icon provides a more powerful feedback (have a look at gaim)

As for me i don't realy care much about the look of it. But sometimes, when some my friends come to my place and use kopete, the general reaction is:

- Its ugly...
- Confuse...

I guess this is mainly because they are used to MSN and Yahoo messengers and those fancy interfaces( they look quite good, actualy ). Is it scheduled to make it themable?

I should expect it would become just as themable as any other KDE program, which would mean that you can use any style on any program by appending --style stylename to the command you use to launch the program with. Give it a try with Kopete, try something like Comix , I suspect it would suit it quite well :)

I really like it! the only thing stopping me from using kopete instead of gaim at the moment is the butt-ugly conversation windows. For some reason they really tick me of =) If this were implemented i would switch to Kopete tomorrow!

I've got a slight suggestion for you, you may or may not like it of course, but here goes :)

A (granted short) talk on #kopete with lillache (who is doing a rewrite of the chatwindow to make interface changes like this much easier) led to the conclusion that, while the ideas you present here are brilliant, some parts seem, for want of a better way of putting it, un-KDEish. More specifically, we were talking about your use of the QCategoryWidget as opposed to how it is normally done in KDE (see Konqueror, Kate, amaroK and many other programs). Using that type of sidebar would immediately remove two problems of the sidebar you have now:

- The already mentioned lack of KDEness
- The size problem mentioned in an earlier post

The size problem is fixed by the fact that the sidebars, when folded away, take up only the space occupied by the buttons, whereas the category widget always has at least one category shown, and thus take up all the space no matter what.

Just a suggestion, with accompanying reasoning for making it :)

Finally, a great comment. No offense to anyone :) I completely forgot about that sidebar features used in kde. The initial concept was done in Qt so that is why the sidebar is the way it is. As for making it more KDE-ish, I will. I will search for the sidebar feature you suggested and replace the current sidebar with that. Thanks for the suggestion. It's absolutely brilliant.

would it be possible to choose either sidebar, because in all honesty, this sidebar is much more elegant.
I mean, the KDE sidebar is plain ugly... when it comes down to it, the only plus feature of the KDE sidebar is space used when multipe sidebar 'pages' are used, eg konqy, so not half of teh sidebar's vertical space is used with options. But with this, options are a t a minimum, they've been refined, which should be the case, not just aloowing for more.

anyway, if that made sense, if not, the long & short. coudl you make either sidebars optional in a .rc file?

I am not sure how everything will be integrated. Hopefully, we can stick to the original design but I have to talk to the UI Maintainer first.
