Taskbar v2 (flat + thumbnails)

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements

Source (link to git-repo or to original if based on someone elses unmodified work): Add the source-code for this project on opencode.net

0
5.0
Description:

A beautiful taskbar for kicker.

features:
o flat and transparent (if kicker is transparent)
o animated thumbnail views (animation equations correspond to kpager2)

You probably need to restart kicker after adding the taskbar.

based on taskbar of kde 3.2

compilation:
FIX the file modification times first:
find . -print -exec touch {} ;

Then
(make -f Makefile.cvs)
./configure
make
su
make install

If it doesn't work, you probably need to remove the autom4te directory. Moreover, using mtaskbar.kdevelop will help in any case.

Have fun!

yes, I believe it is time to upload the latest version, before I forget that all of you have to use one with disturbing edges and bleeds.

i like the features of the taskbar, but for me it is somewhat buggy. As soon as i hover over an app in the taskbar, and then over a second app in the taskbar, the tekst of the first app gets mixed with the text of the second app.

Kinda hard to explain like this, so let's use an image: http://shorl.com/betipritifradra

is it some setting on my side?

i'm pretty new to this, but when i run ./configure i get an error saying it can't find the X includes. i have no clue how to fix this.

Hmmm. Interesting. Either your X include pathes differ from usual distributions or you need to install the X development packages.

I installed this, but I still don't get the transparent windowlist. How do you activate it?

as already said, there are probs when taking a screenshot for the thumbnails in apps like mplayer or opengl related apps.
my suggestion:
just add a textbox or something like that to the adv. config dialog and let the user exclude tasks from being snapshot'ted.
I really like your prog, the tumb's too, but won't use it with the thumb's enabled.

cheers,

I'm sorry to bother you, but this app is causing small pauses with all OpenGL and Video-player applications... :-(

I am unable to get the boxes in the taskbar to be transparent. The whole bar is, but as soon as I open a window, the effect is ruined by a grey box. Your screenshot doesn't have this problem; any clues on what I'm doing wrong?

nevermind, I'm offically a dummy. For anyone making the my same mistake, remove the taskbar applet from kicker and add taskbar v2.

It would be great if you could integrate taking Screenshots of Windows with Kompose.

If you have Kompose and your Taskbar running, Screenshots are taken twice. It would be great if you app would take screenshots and kompose can access these screenshots.

Ouch. that's true, indeed - I was already thinking about redundant thumbnails in kpager2. But: How to do that?

PS: Your bug concerning dragndrop - I can't reproduce it here.

Me, one more time :-/
I just noticed the animation when a task appears.
It's cool, but it's not I meaned by "xp like anim".
I means: the entry take 5 pixels width, and a fraction of second it take 10 pixels, and then 15... until it has grown to its size. When a task disappears, it "ungrow": it lost 5 pixels, and other 5 pixels, until its size is == 0.
That's very smooth and eye candy, by removing the rigidity appearance of the taskbar.

I know. I planned something like this. But that would need some changes in the layout which would break compatiblity with the original taskbar. I will collect these suggestions and will file a bug report for the taskbar.

Hi!
I'm using this task bar with fun.
And I found one thing.

The title characters (on task bar) are
not readable when the corresponding window
is inactive.
When the window is active, the title is
very clear black and look nice.
I think title on task bar should be
clear when the window is inactive
because people probably access to it
when they want maximize some windows.
(it is rather useful to be clear
when they watch it!)

thanx.

I believe this is not a problem with the taskbar, but with the fonts you are using. (I don't have any problems here). It's just that the font will be bold for active tasks. If other tasks (inactive or minimized) are almost unreadable, change the taskbar font in the control center.

This has become really cool.
It should one day be integrated
into KDE by default! The button
look of the ordinary taskbar
completely destroyed the transparent
look.
Minor glitch:
My desktop background image isn't
continued seamlessly. It looks like
TaskbarV2 took the wrong part of
the image.

Quite often (especially while
webbrowsing and changing pages
often) the hover image shows
an outdated image.
I know this is because you only can
do the screenshot once in a while
because it would slow down the
computer too quick if a
large screenshot is taken every
second. But I have an idea:
Would it be possible to request
just a single pixel close to the
corner of the window and if it
is different to what is saved
then update immediately!
If that doens't work, would it be
possible to do a screenshot always
before showing the thumbnail if
and only if the window is not
minimized?

Thanks for all the work so far
it's really appreciated.

Due to X11 limitations (without using the xorg thing) it is only possible to take screenshots of the actual screen and to crop the windows from there. A continuous update is not possible unless it is the active window (doesn't work in 'focus on mouse hover' mode, only in 'focus on click'). Whenever XCompMgr becomes default I might integrate it, such that we have at least a new thumbnail every 20 seconds.

Sometimes when taking the screenshot X is too slow to redraw the opened window. Hence I take a screenshot when the windows is not yet painted - a wrong one. Therefore, I introduced a short delay of 50 msec to let X draw. This methods is working in most cases. Sometimes, however, X is still too slow or in the other case the user is too fast in switching between windows and the screenshot is takien too late.

There is no chance too make it better right now. Later - sure. If it is distracting I recommend to disable the feature for the next 18 months. ;-)

Another problem is that your taskbar does not support Drag n Drop. You know, when I want to dnd a file form one konqueror windows to a different window, which is hidden, the classic taskbar allows to drag the file to the taskbar, which then brings this window to the front and then you can drop the file in this window.

This does not work with your taskbar.

But anyway... this problem won't hinder me from using your taskbar. It may just be something that needs to be implemented, if your taskbar will be included in KDE.

Ouch!

I need to check that issue. Originally I just inherit the old taskbar classes. Why don't I inherit the dragndrop thing? Ok. Right now I compile against kde3.2 (but Ii belioeved they alrady had that).

??? ...many question signs... ???

I noticed how the new tabs slowly fade-in, and this is really cool!! Probably the best feature of your app. Could you also make it fade-out, or fade if you switch to another window? (but I'm not sure everone likes constant fading, but I certainly do, perhaps it needs to be make optional from a control panel)

Thanks in advice!

Report

C

lucher

it's not possible with the underlying taskbar classes. When switching desktops from A to B that items of A will be hidden, the others will be shown. A fade-out would invoke an overfull taskbar during desktop switching - just imagine you would already switch to desktop C before the fade-out animation is finished! You would have a flicker for all 3 desktops in your taskbar, including continuous relayouting.

Hi.

I really like this taskbar! I hope the preview function will be merged to the standard KDE CVS soon! :-)

I did notice a small problem with the preview screenshots, they often contain an preview window as well. Off course these problems could become history after XComposite is a defacto standard, but could you solve this screenshot problem?
