Konqueror search/filter field idea
Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements

Aloha!
I am interested in hearing what you fellow Konq users think about this feature:
I am very happy with the function and speed of the search field in Kmail. It works very well for me. You type in a keyword and emails are filtered according to it, providing quick access and powerful instant and temporary "grouping" of emails.
But I am not very happy with the "Find file..." function of Konq, the killer app most of my desktop usage relies on. You have to open the search window, use * and ? and so on to specify the filenames. It does not feel efficient. So I wonder, do you think it would be possible/favourable to import the Kmail search field design to Konq and have a small search field much like the Google-field? With small buttons to make the file-system search recursive or system-wide. I know I would love that.
What do you think?
[2004-11-14] CONCEPT SCREENSHOT HAS BEEN UPDATED!
[2004-11-14] IT IS NOW POSSIBLE TO VOTE FOR THIS FEATURE OVER AT bugs.kde.org.
Please visit: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93236 to vote. And post links to this page and the voting page on your favorite user forum to spread the interest in this feature!
PS. I can not find any special KDE-related forum/mailing-list set up for feature requests. I can think of no better site than this for that. Maybe there should be a Kwishlist section here on kde-apps? DS

a misspelled url never sends you to a search page. check it out. I know internet exploders irritating behaviour, and thats just stupid. but konqi doesnt do that, it only searches google if you just enter "webpage". it'l search. and it'l search "webpage about linux". but it wont search "webpage.zak", altough it doesnt exist.
so why a seperate google bar? why not try to make clear you can use konqi's locationbar for google? and insert the same drop-down button from the google bar in the locationbar so you can search google with it, AND MAYBE CHOOSE A KIO_SLAVE(?) (for which the kde devs are looking for anyway).
the whole locationbar is goin' to be redesigned anyway... I hope they can keep it as small as possible, not wasting screenspace (as a seperate google search box does, imho).

so, i propose:
dump the googlebar, the locationbar can already search google. the only thing you lose is the option to choose another searchengine, so make the icon in the locationbar behave the same.
now on kde-apps and kde-developer.org there is a discussion about the kio-slaves, how their functionallity could be made easier to access. well, maybe they could be included in the drop-down menu...

Sure, after someone tell him how to do it he would know about it, but IMO in too many cases will remain another hidden feature

currentpath/*string*
you get the same result.

Maybe an extra page of help would be better than a filter bar.
Maybe a 'this is the first time you've used konq, would you like a quided tour', would be even better still.

konqi should search google instead of giving an error by default... (eg google should be made default search engine and voila we dont need the google search bar anymore, you can just use the location bar... much easier)
such a solution should be used for this, too. why not make it possible to use wildcards in the locationbar, and let the files showed be narowed down?
for exampley, you type ~/documents/*test.doc
and konqi only shows documents like gametest.doc latesttest.doc etc, not thisisnotaproperfile.doc or things like that.
maybe the sidebar could at the same time show a searchbar, and you should be able to select certain filetypes etc...

The only "problem" is that directory are always shown (the wildcard apply only to files)

Use the location bar to force on a web searcher in case of mispelled URL a la Internet Explorer? Why?
Is this intuitive? No.
The location bar is used to enter locations, and not to put down sentences that have to be searched.

The first is to request a location, and the other is to request a search for a location.
Granted /etc/passwords shouldn't kick off google,
but www.kdeapps.org or trout fishing should.
I would say that the search bar is unintuitive clutter, it's just that you've got a pre-programmed method of using the location bar, so it seems hard for you to think of it as a 'request' bar. I think you would be more 'productive' if the location bar performed searched from day one.

> konqi should search google instead giving an error by default...
Just go to Preferences->Configure Konqueror->Web-Shortcuts
and choose Google as the Default-Searchengine

How to mimic your request with kio_locate:
1. Open Konqueror and go to "Configure Konqueror..." (in the Settings menu).
2. Click on Web Shortcuts in the left icon list.
3. Click on "New..." to add a new (Web) Shortcut.
4. For "Search Provider Name" I inserted "local"... but use whatever makes sense for you ("My Computer", etc.)
5. For "Search URI" put "locate:/\{@}" (without the quotes) or "ilocate:/\{@}" for the case insensitive search. And, yes, that's a forward slash and a backward slash (or backward slash and a forward slash... I can never remember).
6. Click OK and then select your new "search engine" as the default from the drop down menu just below.
Now, when in "web" mode, the search does just what you want. However, for File Management it switches back. Anyone know how to add it in for both?
(I can't get spaces to work in my locate:/ searches, though. I'm probably doing something wrong).
Oh, and give props to the kio_locate folks! :)

for example, you are in ~/documents and you are looking for "webreport 1994.rtf". you can type in "~/documents/webrep" and all showed files should match this criteria. or you type "~/documents/*1994.rtf" and only those files are showed.
this way, no new bars, non-obtrusive, and just works TM

The default directory should be the present one, or you could simply specify another directory.
I have a LOT of scientific documents here and there in my home directory, and even though I try to use different software for managing articles and so on, I always end up having my filesystem as database. As most such files have informative names (e.g., Collins_metazoa_1998.pdf), it would be very nice to just type "metazoa" in the field and narrow the selection of files down to all files named *metazoa*, and locate *metazoa* files in nested directories if the search is recursive.
I am (sadly) not a programmer myself, so I do not know how to implement this. But considering that there A) already is a "Google-field" and B) already is a locate protocol (see above) around it should not be too difficult for a person more clever than I to try out merging those projects. I guess a new search field would be the nicest thing, but even having the option to switch the web search to local search in the Google field would be perfectly fine as well.

With locate, you can use urls like for example
'locate:~/+.kwd' to find all kword documents in your home directory.
Konqueror also has a built in 'find' tool, go to "Tools->Find File" in a directory.
