the xpm looks a bit horrible, you sure. but what was your trick? your bootpicture looks great, and i can see all colours?!

I installed grub-gfxboot u can do the same following this steps

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=4673

doing this you can see your grub bootscreen on full colours.

If you like this I'll upload it in xpm format fot the normal boot manager, but the image loses lot of quality and colour because the file in xpm boot format only accept 14 colours.

How to install a grub theme:

  1. Extract the theme to /boot/grub/themes/

  2. Edit /etc/default/grub file. Find the line starting with "#GRUB_THEME" and change it to "GRUB_THEME=/boot/grub/themes/[THEME_FOLDER]/[theme.txt]" (replace [THEME_FOLDER] ; [theme.txt] is probably OK ; remove "[]" brackets)

  3. Run sudo update-grub
