For KBear to accept .png files and -more importantly- stop printing the text "A Graphical FTP Client for KDE" on top of every splashscreen you use, a patch must be applied.
Step-by-step installation guide:
1] tar xjvf KBear-BlueSplash-1.0.tar.bz2 && cd KBear-BlueSplash-1.0
2] Download the sourcecode: http://kbear.sourceforge.net/clicks_counter.php?url=http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/kbear/kbear-2.1-1.src.tar.bz2 and extract it: tar xjvf /where/you/put/it/kbear-2.1-1.src.tar.bz2
3] Apply the patch: cd kbear-2.1 && patch -Np1 -i ../kbear-2.1.patch
4] Install KBear: ./configure && make && make install
5] Install splashscreen: cp ../kbear-logo-* /opt/kde3/share/apps/kbear/
!] At least the QT headers must be installed for compilation to succeed, /opt/kde3 may have to be replaced by /usr/local/kde3 or something else, depending on your distro.
This splashscreen is published under the General Public License, read LICENSE for more info. I do like to keep informed when you put KBear-BlueSplash up for download on for example your homepage (wich is not at all prohibited).
