I did everything you said and now everything is ok. I get the latest version from the ppa and it works. Thanks.

All the files from the ppa go in some folders under /usr/share.

If you check the about dialog, what version does it say that you run?

The about dialog says 0.39.6-1. Very strange. Synaptic tells me I have 0.39.8-0

The problem started one I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10. I installed dockbarx from ppa:dockbar-main/ppa.

Also, after reinstall gconf-editor says that all the keys under /apps/dockbarx have no owner and "This key has no schema".

Unlike some die hard linux users, I think there is a lot to learn from other UI. Having a slim panel like this makes a lot more sense than say Gnome-Shell which takes up a lot of screen space.

I use AWN currently in place of Gnome panels and if this improves tasking/grouping/preview I'm all over it.

btw, can u change the superbar theme in windows 7? NO! so there, linux shit. dockbarx is just an option. some people like windows 7 functionality, others the plain simplistic fluxbox DE. but those are just options to make people comfortable with linux.

Keep it civilized, please. Carbono hasn't even bothered to read the first question in FAQ before he wrote his misinformed opinion so it's not worth the energy to shout at him.

I've never understood what windows copied from KDE, so I think that argument is a bit weak, by the way. I think it's better to just state that every operating system is borrowing from other systems. Software development is about evolution far more than it's about revolution. And that's how it should be. Rebuilding the wheel isn't a goal in itself.

As the developer of dockbarx, I don't try to hide the fact that much inspiration comes from Windows superbar. There is quite a few good ideas behind it worth porting to Linux. On the other hand, the goal of DockbarX isn't to clone the superbar, but ultimately to make something even better. (Quite a few thing is already better on dockbarx, IMHO. Some exampels: you can scroll the mouse wheel to select windows, left click brings up all windows of a program and the zeitgeist integration will be worth more than jump lists when more programs gets support for zeitgeist.)

You have a desktop, more Windows shit. You have a mouse cursor, more windows shit. You have folders, more windows shit. You use a browser, more windows shit.
The deskbar is ellegant and extremely useful. If you don't like it, just dont use it ;) And btw, check the first point of the FAQ on this page and then comment ...

I found the lib on the internet, but i couldn't compile it. It gave me this error:
checking for GTK... configure: error: Package requirements (gtk+-2.0 >= 2.20
) were not met:

Requested 'gtk+-2.0 >= 2.20' but version of GTK+ is 2.18.9
What should i do ?

Did you try to compile from source as well? According to the INSTALL instructions it should be as simple as
./configure
make
make install

Hey, i have the latest verion under fedora 12, but it gives me this error "OAFIID:GNOME_DockBarXApplet". When i try to run it in debug mode (./dockbarx_factory.py run-in-window)it says that there's no keybinder lib. I searched yum, but nothing matched. What should i do ?

When googling I find python-keybinder rpms for mandriva at least. Since it's python, perhaps they work on fedora as well?

Hi M75,
Thanx a lot for the dockbarx. its great.
I've installed it and it works nicely except that I am unable to change themes. I have downloaded the theme pack and extracted the same in the themes folder. Its showing up in the Properties>Appearance but whenever I try to change the theme it changes to default once I close the window. Any help here Sir?

Perhaps I should move the AWN install instructions so that they are above the ubuntu install instructions? If you've done the manual install you have a folder called AWN in the folder where you extracted the tar.gz file you downloaded. The content of that folder should then be copied to the folder /home/YOURNAME/.config/awn/applets. A folder starting with a dot is hidden press ctrl+h when browsing a folder in nautilus to see the hidden folders.

If you installed dockbarx from ppa, you can install dockbarx for awn by installing the package awn-applet-dockbarx.

Love DockBarX, and have been for the last few versions.

But have just noticed a small annoying niggle with the latest version: pop-ups have a delay before they disappear when you move your mouse off DockBarX.

If moving to another item in DBX there's no problem - you can set this delay to 0, but when moving your mouse OFF DBX there is always a delay. I think moving off DBX should use the same delay as moving to another item, so I can set it to 0.
