Description:

OS X has forever changed the way operating systems will be viewed. Artistically, OS X has raised the bar for OS design so high that the artistic appeal of a desktop manager is now a critical component of any commercial desktop. OS-L aims to match and exceed what can be found in OS X. In theory, there are enough icons in this set to almost recreate the entire look and feel of OS X (I couldn't make it that easy). However, many of the icons used to give OS X its' unique look and feel have been purposely replaced with alternatives from some of the best open source icon designers in the world (Reason - They're just better, but that's subjective of course). This icon set is a natural extention to Baghira (Thanks Thomas, what you've done with Mosfets code is unbelievable), but, understand that this icon set unbuilt has nearly 12 MB of icons, which means that in no way should you limit yourself to trying to recreate the look and feel of OS X. Customizing this build kit is a necessity, because you litterally have a choice between at least 3 icons for every application, device, folder, and mime type in the set. I thought of never releasing this compilation but I've downloaded the IcOsX-0.7.tar.gz numerous times and I felt that It was time that it evolved. Thanks Maitre for the original build kit script, without it I would have never constructed the Kde Icon Build Kit Template which makes releasing icon sets so simple. I hope everyone loves this build kit, because it is the ultimate compilation of the efforts of icon artist around the globe. Thanks everyone here at Kde-look, Xicons.com, Iconfactory.com, Aqua-soft.org, Aero-soft.org, Gnome-look.org, Wincustomize.org and everyone that I wish I could list individually. This is only 4/5 of the entire icon set, so look for version 1.5 comming soon.

Forgot to add the following:

To build the icon set run the included buildscript (./buildscript) Some icons may need to be renamed to have them show up natively in your distribution. All comments are welcomed, both good and bad.

Version 1.0:

Added about 2MB worth of additional icons in the apps, and devices folders. This will be the offical 1.0 release, but I still would like to add another 2MB worth of icons to the build kit.

Considering how many files you can download from this site that contain blank readme files, it's an understandable oversight....

I installed this new icon theme.

But it doesnt seem to be using the 128x128 icons.

How can I get it to use these?

Thank you

I installed these icons, but how do I change the icons to what I want to use?

For example, I love one of the trashcan icons in the 128x128 folder, but how can I get my Deskstop and Taskbar to actually use this icon?

Thanks

Thanks for the compliment. Although there are tons of alternate icons to select from, the funny thing about OS-L is that it isn't really complete. I have about another 80 to 100 icons that I have just been to lazy to add. However, in the comming weeks, i'm going to do a big release of another icon set that in my opionion far surpasses OS-L, along with my very first SuperKaramba release, and an update to the Exqusite and H30-D3a icon releases.

I just installed your iconset and all I can say is WOW! I realize that it is in a large part a compilation but it is, and I don't think I am overstating this, by far the best iconset I have ever installed. I had been looking for so long for an iconset that I really liked and this fit the bill completely. One more thing, and I will stop raving, is you have made it so complete with so much choice. Thank you.

I like very much this iconset (I've voted good). I like the ideea of photorealistic, but there is a drawback: inconsistency. Even if there are a lot of icons they don't cover well the needs of the the system so will result a combination of these icons with the system default ones which generates an overall non-polished aspect.

Well, inconsistency can be a problem, but OS L wasn't really put together with the idea of having a uniform look and feel. It was assembled to demonstrate the artwork of some of the best icon designers in the world. The photo-realistic look was made very popular by apple, but the icon designers have been creating great icons in that style for years. OS L is just a small sample of what has been produced over the past 2 years in celebration of the artists incredible work. if you would like to achieve a consistent look and feel, you should probably select icons from the set that are similar in design and create a subset which could then be made into a seperate icon set.

I've tried to do so but my time is very limited so I don't know if I'll ever manage to finish it up. Anyway I think a complex task like this needs a well organized aproach. First it's necessary a list with all the devices, filesystems, mimetypes and actions present by default on a KDE system and another one with the apps which are used more often. Then every entry in the lists got to have its match with a sugestive icon.

Look in the OS-L build kit folder after you run the build script and you should find bzip archive that is around 10MB in size. Install this archive using the icon install menu under the Kcontrol center.

Ahhhh yes, a confusing problem with an embarasingly simple answer. You installed the archive that you downloaded rather than the archive the buildset created for you. Be sure you install the file called "OS-L.tar.bz2" and not the one you downloaded.

These look great on my desktop! Are ALL these icons GPL'd? Where did you get them?

Report

Almost all of them are GPL. There are some that feature the Apple logo that of course are not. Should Apple request that they be removed, I will obviously oblidge them. The IcOSX Icon set featured a few icons from Jaguar and Apple never complained, so hopefully they wont complain about OS-L either.
