i think that alloting those pixels to space on your desktop is considerably more exciting that some static icons that never change.
remember, the exciting thing about computers is what you can do with them, not what your desktop looks like when you just sit there staring at it...

The icons do look really nice in normal size, but I use small for a more viewable area on the desktop and open apps.
Sure, but I like the extra space for the task applet.
Try a normal sized panel and watch the nice icons. Mandrake has a love for that small panel, which looks very boring to me.
