Description:
I think this is about as close as i can get kde to mimic OS X.

KDE 3.2 is going to rock. Note the transparent kicker, cool window shadows, and shadowed text on the desktop.

I am using:
- KDE 3.2 (CVS)
- AquaX+ GTK themes
- Mosfet liquid style
- Mac Icons
- Customised gaim and kmix dock icons
- 'Near Aqua' colour scheme
- Mac IE mozilla firebird theme
- (my) xTunes XMMS skin
- (my) OSX-Brushed mplayer skin
- Lucida Grande & Apple Garamond fonts
- jaguarx X11 mouse theme
- Xscreensaver's 'flurry' hack
- OS X sounds
- bootsplash screen that shows the the same gray apple logo as OS X when i boot

hey, where did you find the style and window decoration ? been searching for 3.2 styles and decoration but haven't found any. the old 3.1 dosen't work.

u telliing me that it's kicker on the bottom of the screen and not a superkaramba theme?

phantomas

Yep. that's the new kicker. You can change its opacity. Unfortunately, you can't change the opacity of individual kickers. In my screenshot, i wanted to have a transparent bottom kicker, and a solid top kicker. Unfortunately atm you've got to have both or neither... So in my screenshot the top kicker is actually transparent. I had to hack the wallpaper image to make it look the kicker has a stippled background.

What Distro are you using?? i have tried everything to get the CVS version running on RH9, i finally managed to get KDElibs and KDEbase installed only to have kwin crash all the time :(

I'm running Debian unstable. There's a guy who makes CVS debian packages here: http://opendoorsoftware.com/cgi/http.pl?p=kdecvs;frame=1) I just used apt-get to install his packages and i've had no (major) problems since. KDE CVS worked straight away. Debian owns...

..what we see in this screenshot.. (statements from dot.kde.org about kde-cvs:) _______________________________ subject: KWin shadows by KrAzY_BoY on Friday 12/Sep/2003, @11:35 I understand that the shadows under windows patch was included in the CVS but i cannot find it anywhere on KDE 3.2 alpha 1. Am i doing something wrong ? I have to uncomment some stuff in config files or add some stuff in kwin config file ? I need that cool thing :( -------------------------------- Re: KWin shadows by Anonymous on Friday 12/Sep/2003, @17:04 Who says that it's included? -------------------------------- Re: KWin shadows by Daniel Molkentin on Friday 12/Sep/2003, @17:20 The shadows are a major hack and way to slow to be included. I think there is a patch at kde-look.org that does this but we already had numerous bug reports where kwin was crashing due to this patch, so I wouldn't recommend it Cheers, Daniel ---------------------------------- Re: KWin shadows by fault on Friday 12/Sep/2003, @21:53 I've been using the patch with HEAD for a few months without many problems. Earlier versions of the patch were very buggy indeed. However, as expected, it needs a fairly good computer. I don't know how good; it's perfectly fast on my Athlon XP 2200+ ---------------------------------- My machine is P III 450 MHz! even if you like Aqua or Mac so much, some people, including me would like to see standard 3.2cvs screenshots, maybe with little bit individual setup like kicker-background. could you show something like that too ? thanks very much. unfortunately, "Kwin Drop Shadows doesn't make it in CVS" if we can believe the statements from dot.kde.org.. is that correct ? anyway, nice desktop, sure.

phantomas

I just installed debian deb packages. I was under the impression that it was just standard KDE CVS, but i guess it's possible that the guy making the packages has tweaked them a bit...

Well, perhaps you want to buy a Mac ?

elektroschock

Mac is a machine for those who can afford it.

First of all - a very nice shot. There are only little things that let me know that this is a kde desktop :) My question. I see you use a round window decoration with perfect shadows even around the bottom corners. In earlier versions of some drop shadow patches you saw an ugly cross in the bottom corners. You mentioned all what you used to make this shot. Did you use any shadow patches, or is that what we can expect from kde 3.2 cvs now ? Perfect macos like shadows for windows and shadowed text for desktop icons out of the box ? Please tell me. Thanks in advance, Heiko

phantomas

Thanks. I'm pretty happy with it. It's a nice desktop to work with... Yep, the shadows are built into the cvs version now. They're not part of the window decoration (Aqua OSK). Find out more about window shadows here: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=5638 And about the desktop text shadows here: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=4750
