nice screensaver, it looks really good. it's my favourite one. One feature request: it would be great if the desktop wouldn't be just a picture, but would be shown in real time. Is this possible to realise?

The Screensaver from Compiz-Fusion do have this function.

That would be an interesting feature. Thanks for mentioning it.

This might be a bit difficult with the current code, though. The Compiz Fusion screensaver is basically a window manager plugin that uses libxss. I suspect I'd need to do something similar: make a version of KCometen4 that's a KWin effect. Would it play nicely with libkscreensaver? No idea.

I'll look into it further when I get a chance. If you see a nicer way, or if you have patches, I'd be happy to see them.

Kubuntu 9.04 (KDE 4.3 beta)

when screen locks, kcometen runs. The first time it runs, everything is normal...unlock screen dialog appears and password returns to desktop.

The second time it runs, kcometen looks fine as a screensaver, but moving the mouse to get an unlock screen dialog locks everything up. The only way out is a hard reset.

Is there something that can be done to avoid this?

I haven't seen that before. Using KDE 4.2.4 here. What happens when you use another KDE OpenGL screen saver like Euphoria or KRotation?

Report

some days it seems like the open source community is the only thing that works right.

Tried using Euphoria. Same thing happened.

Turned compositing off. Euphoria worked. And kcometen too.

I'll explore on Kubuntu or KDE to see if this is a known issue.

Thank you.

I've got this happening on openSUSE too ... with KDE 4.3 (trunk) so it must be OpenGL issue.

Information for howto build the rpm can be found on http://forums.opensuse.org/programming-scripting/407948-rpm-kcometen4-1-0-3-screensaver.html

It is not so difficult as it seems to be.

if you don't want to do it by yourself, drop me an email on [email protected] and I will send you the RPM and/or the spec.file.

Remember: only for Suse 11.1, 64 bits!

I made an RPM for openSuSE 11.1 x86_64,
it is working on the Intell systems, probably also on AMD and other systems - but till now I could only test it on the Intell x86_64.

If you are interested, I can send you the RPM and/or the spec-file. If so, post me a message.

Thanks for that! I think I'm going to keep packaging related files out of the tarball though, because in my experience they get in the way once various distributions start doing their own stuff.

Would you be interested in getting the package into PackMan?

That would be nice. To who/where can I send the RPM etc...?

Thanks for that nice screensaver. I want to use the screensaver on my dual screen system (2 x 16:10 TFT @ 1680x1050). The Screensaver is only in the middle of 3/4 of the screens width (3/4 of (2x1680px width)). that looks cracy because the rest of the screen (1/4) flashing strange. Is it possible, that this screensaver doesnt support 2 screens or is it a problem of the opengl driver (ATI Card). Thx alot!

No idea right now. I don't have a dual screen setup, so it may be a few days before I can scrounge up an extra monitor and try it out.

In the meantime, please send me an email to my sourceforge address (in the AUTHORS file) with some basic stats and, if possible, a screenshot. I'd really be interested in the following: KDE version? xinerama or xrandr? 1 video card or 2? problems with other KDE OpenGL screensavers like euphoria?

What do I need to do to see kcometen4 in srceen saver list? When I run kcomenten from /usr/local/share/kde4/services/ScreenSavers/kcometen4.desktop or /usr/local/bin/kcometen4.kss it works just fine but i dont know how to set it as screen saver.

Thanks!

If you wish to run kcometen4 in slackware you can get the slackbuild scripts for it at http://slackbuilds.org/result/?search=kcometen4&sv= in the case of running it on slackware 12.2 you can use the slackware 13.0 script.

The script builds a working slackware package that is auto-detected by xscreensaver.

I managed to run kcomenten4 in slackware 12.2 and 13.1 by copying kcometen4.desktop in KDE4 settings dir (as jstamp said), but with slackbuild installation is much easier .. Thanks man!

As you said, it looks like KDE isn't searching for screensaver .desktop files in /usr/local. Other people have had this issue, so I'd better put it in the README.

You can work around this by copying kcometen4.desktop to your KDE4 settings dir:

~/.(kde|kde4)/share/kde4/services/ScreenSavers

After KDE rescans the settings it should show up in the System Settings Screen Saver module.
