Description:

Bangarang is a media player for KDE. The name comes from the Jamaican word for noisy, chaos or disorder.

Feedback and patches are definitely welcome. Packaging contributions are also welcome. I only ask one thing: please be respectful. I do this in my spare time and, as such, I'd like to keep my motivation up.

The source code is maintained on http://gitorious.org/bangarang and anyone interested in helping is certainly welcome.

Please report bugs to http://code.google.com/p/bangarangissuetracking/issues/list

Thanks much for your help!

Great Player. The first Player i found with a usable video library.

I 've no pulse audio. When i try to play a file i get an error, that the sound device is not working.

Fedora 12, KDE 4.
Tray Icon would be nice.

Thankfully someone recently donated Brazilian Portuguese translations. Should be in the next bugfix release in a few weeks.

Hi,
the app seems wonderful, downloaded and installed it. The interface is very simple yet effective.
I stopped using Amarok only because of the ugly external HDD support, which obliged me to wait 45 mins (with the pc blocked) every time I tried to listen to music from my external 1TB HDD.
Does Bangarang support external devices? I mean, do I have to reload the collection every mount, like with Amarok?

Try it. I haven't strictly tested this use case. But, currently I have all my videos on a my desktop machine. I manually mount the nfs share on my laptop when I need it. Bangarang always shows me all the videos I categorized - mounted or not.

The only thing that will likely not work is if the external hdd mounts to a different mount point. Nepomuk in KDE SC 4.4 has some new accomodation for that so I'll work that into the next feature release.

Hope this helps.

Hi, seems to work with my external HDD. Even tho its not very fast, it does not freeze the computer like Amarok does.

I have GIT version and I still get this error every time when I use urpmi (Mandriva distribution) package manager to install other packages or I install other software what I compile myself from source.

Could not parse file '/usr/share/applications/kde4/bangarang.desktop': Key file contains line '/* BANGARANG MEDIA PLAYER' which is not a key-value pair, group, or comment

This problem was fixed before beta 3. That line is no longer in the bangarang.desktop file. Are you sure you have the latest version?

I think a tray icon to hide main app will be good. Good work man, it's really awesome :)

Good work, but miss add to systemtray and equalizer.
What is with the video settings?
Brightness, contrast, hue and saturation not work for me. Or need other apps?

Thank you for efforts

Looks very promising. Could this be my default media player which will finally replace overbloated amarok and non KDE's smplayer?! :) Remains to see... ;)

How about include some DLNA (UPnP) functionality, using the Bangarang as a media server to deliver audio/video files using the (really, really great) categories presented by the player?

KDE really needs a good UPnP Media Server, integrated with KDE technology (nepomuk)!

Yeah, a Coherence plug in would be great. I'll probably make the Bangarang platform code into a library soon so it would be easy to create a Coherence plugin using it. The platform code is already completely separated from the ui code and it drives all the data in all the lists, including the sidebar lists under audio and video. If anyone cares to jump in they're more than welcome!

I don't know if you plan to provide this at some time but libvalhalla might be a good option for this, as amarok implementation gets broken for me from time to time (lyricwiki).
I would suggest to use this lib but I guess this feature should happen after 1.0

Youre developing under Ubuntu, why dont you create a deb-file.

Ive some trouble compiling the player:

CMake Error at /usr/share/kde4/apps/cmake/modules/FindPhonon.cmake:63 (message):
Phonon library or includes NOT found!

But ive installed the libs and the file is right there.

There is a Ubuntu Karmic Package in my PPA Repository, you can find it here
: https://launchpad.net/~solard3ity/+archive/official

I dont build Bangarang every day, I monitor gitorious.org/bangarang and decide to build or not to build...

Have fun!..

In the video section I can make a new list/category but I can't really do much with it as far I can tell. adding new videos to created lists is unintuitive.

The default video categories of Movies and TV Shows dont really cover all the bases of types of video that people collect. I think it needs default categories for Shorts and Music Videos. Or least Shorts, since I guess "Music" could be tagged as the genre. also it would be nice to have an artist/director tag for videos.

Yeah, I'll be adding a "Add selected to <Saved List>" action, just haven't gotten around to it yet. :-)

The Video Clips type is the catch all at the moment for anything that's not a Movie or a TV Show. Shorts is also a good name for it I guess, but I'll leave it as Video Clips for now. I've have something very specific in mind for music vidoes, but it needs a few more pieces - likely be a post 1.0 thing... I really want to focus on getting the basics working relatively bug free first.

Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback.
