Description:

This wizard will allow you to create a DVD from one or more DVD compatible MPEG-2 files. It is designed to be very easy to use. All you need to do is add one or multiple files to the playlist and answer the questions that follow.

You can add a menu that will contain animated thumbnails of the files in the playlist. Creating a menu is optional.

Features include:

* Playlist editor
* DVD menu with multiple pages
* Animated thumbnails in the menu
* Customisable menu graphics
* Add soundtrack from OGG or MP3
* Antialiased graphics prevent flickering on TV
* Both Widescreen and standard 4:3 support
* ISO DVD Image creation
* MPEG2 DVD compatibility checking
* Support for both PAL and NTSC menus

Requirements:

* Kommander >= 1.0 (part of kdewebdev >= 3.3.0)
* ImageMagick 6.2 or 6.3
* MJPEGTools
* Sox
* DVDAuthor >= 0.6.11
* Transcode

Not required (but recommended):

* Xine-UI (for testing the DVD)
* K3B

How to Install:

Just unpack the archive and run the 'Installer.kmdr' script. That's it!

Please contact me if you experience a problem.

-------------------------------------

*** IMPORTANT ***

Because ImageMagick developers keep changing the commandline syntax for every single version, the KDE DVD Authoring Wizard does not work with versions older than 6.1.0. Also, newer versions are not compatible with their predecessors. That's why you need to make sure that your DVDAuthor version is newer than ImageMagick, because it uses ImageMagick for menu processing.

Please send your complaints about this mess to the ImageMagick mailing list.

First od all I wouldlike to thank the author for this tool. For several monts i was looking for a simple tool to create DVDs frommy home videos and somehow dvdstyler and qdvdauthor never worked under my suse10. Finaly I found this wizard and all worked (after some struggeling) just fine.
Nevertheless I have some comments to this tool that perhaps might helpyou to improve it a bit. First I was looking for some email or list on your website, but I did not find it (maybe this could help you the gain more feedback) so I am using this forum:
1. There is lack of support for non english character sets when creating titles. This menas that I can use slovak (my native language) characters like ščťžľô..... in the names, becasue they would be displyed incorrectly.
2. When creating dvd (before iso) the program allowes me to click next before the operation is completed. (this is a problem becase it took me several runs to figer out).
3. When your dvd directory is on ntfs mounted file system it will fail creating dvd iso because of lower case file names that are automaticly createdon ntfs systems. Maybe a small hint when choosing dvd sirectory will do the job.

Thats all so far. Once again thanks for the great peaceof work!!!!

Thanks for your feedback! My email address can be found by clicking on my name at the top of this page.

Special characters should work perfectly as long as you select fonts that support them. If this is not the problem, you can try if ImageMagick can render special characters in the first place. The wizard uses ImageMagick to render the characters.

Kommander has some limitations, controlling the Next/Previous buttons is one of them.

About NTFS filesystems: I could add a thousand more sanity checks to the wizard, but there is a limit.. :) The wizard assumes that the filesystem is decent, which is indeed not the case for NTFS. It is up to you if you want to use filesystems like that, but please don't complain if this leads to trouble..

Concerning your email sorry for not paying enough attention.
Concerning the special characters. I will elaborate a bit more and let you know.
Concerning NTFS you are absolutely right, but it was preinstalled on my USB drive and I did not find enough time to change that (which is a silly excuse :-) )
Anyhow thanks a lot for the wizard.

PS: Automatic creation of chapters (just like in QDVDAuthor) would be an extremely cool feature for 1.1

Hi,

I use DVD Authoring Wizard on a dvb-t mpg file.
The check compatibility give me good results, my file was fully DVD compatible.
The problem is that the iso file is equal to 0.
I suppose something is wrong but I don't find why ?
Any suggestion ?

Sorry, running the script without commandline arguments should not generate this error. In fact, it you get this error, the Kommander GUI will not work either.

I got a similar report from someone else running Debian and Bash 3.1. Could you please send me an e-mail and tell me your Bash version?

You should not run the shell script from the commandline. You should run the Kommander script using the Kommander Executor. See the included README file.

Ok, I skipped the menu creation (it didn't work for me because I have a wrong imagemagick) and then
Please check that your mpeg files are dvd compatible:
The error was MenuPage2.mpg

I've been happly going along here, excpet I cannot seem to get a valid version of imagemagick to work. I have the listed requirements, and am working my way through all of the available version in gentoo hoping one will work for me.

Can anyone tell me a specific imagemagick version that works?

I've tried the oldest one I can use, and the newest one... now the ones in between.

I can make a preview, its when it builds the menus that it complains.

Thanks for any advice... It may be worth mentioning in each release what versions of imagemagick it was done with in mind..

Thanks much!

The error message

BAD IMAGE

means that DVDAuthor fails to use ImageMagick correctly. DVDAuthor needs to use different ImageMagick commands for each ImageMagick version. The wizard should have generated a nice error dialog explaining that your ImageMagick version does not work with your DVDAuthor version. If you do not see this dialog, and the debug output does show a BAD IMAGE error, please contact me by e-mail.

Possible causes of the BAD IMAGE error are:

1. Your ImageMagick version is newer than DVDAuthor, so DVDAuthor does not know how to use the installed ImageMagick.

2. You installed ImageMagick *after* installing DVDAuthor. Re-merging DVDAuthor might help.

On my Gentoo box, all 6.1.x and 6.2.x ImageMagick versions work perfectly.

Report

wbchmura

Upon further inspection, I am not entirely convinced it is an imagemagick problem.... I've gone through the output debug files and the only errors I can find involve:

DVDAuthorWizard 1.04: Unable to load file (/home/video/robotchicken/DVDAuthorWiz
ard_Temporary_Files_24697/DVDMenuBase.png).
WARN: Bad image, skipping line -1

Yet, this file does exist.

Otherwise I could find no other errors

This time was using imagemagick 6.2.2.3 per a prior post.

Report

I've got an imagemagick problem too.

imagemagick 6.2.4
kdedvdauthor 1.0.4

It would be really nice if somebody would wrtie the exact version of imagemagick that is required for this to work. Something like > 6.1.0 and < 6.2.x

I tried removing the background image of the menu because I thought that was the problem but it didn't help.

any plans for adding chapters? or is there a way to add chapters to the mpgs before adding them to the list?

Yes, this is planned. There will be a possibility to create a text file that has the same name as the MPEG, but different filename extension. This file can contiain time codes and the wizard will automatically find and use them.

Maybe this feature will be in version 1.1.

Report

This tool is great but unfortunately without any use for me because it lacks the possibility to add chapters.

I frequently burn movies to DVD which I recorded on TV and therefore I would appreciate the possibility to specify an interval for fixed length chapters, i.e. "create a chapter every xx minutes". I did some bash script generating the necessary chapters option for the dvdauthor vob tag.

Version 1.01 fails to create the menu (makes an empy video file). The various frame extraction steps seem to work fine, but I find the following error in the 'DebugOutput' file.

**ERROR: [mplex] Unable to open file /Alexander/Filmer/Opptak/DVD/DVDAuthorWizard_Temporary_Files_14879/MenuPage1.m2v for reading.

The menu preview works fine, and creating the menu (with the same options) works in version 0.96).

The Wizard creates the previews (I can start them manually if I go searching for the files), but doesn't play them.

Something else for the wishlist - I sometimes have 8 short films on a DVD. Rather than having screenshots as the menu buttons, which allow only 6 per screen, and therefore 2 screens are needed, how about an option to just have text, thereby allowing more?
