Description:

Kopete is a multi-protocol instant messenger, supporting Jabber, ICQ, AIM, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo! Messenger written for the KDE desktop.

This is Kopete 0.12.1. It should compile and work with KDE versions 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5. It contains fixes for the ICQ client is too old error.

Installation Instructions
=========================

Make sure you have at least KDE 3.3 and Qt 3.3 before compiling this
release. Please be sure to install this version over the version
you have installed currently. run the command 'kde-config
--prefix' to see what prefix you should pass to configure. Or you
can do something like this:

./configure --prefix=`kde-config --prefix`

Kopete will probably fail to work correctly if it is not installed in
he correct place. If you need more help please send a mail to
[email protected] or join us on irc in the #kopete channel at
irc.freenode.org. Please keep in mind that you may not get an
immediate response when asking questions.

Hi

I just installed Kopete 0.9 following instruction wrote upper.
But when I open Kopete, I'm still under 0.8.4 version... ??
Off course I took care about the "--prefix" when I ran ./configure.

What happenned ?

Info : I'm under Linux Mandrake 10.1 with KDE 3.2.3

i've got troubles getting cyryllic msgs (sent in cp1251 i think). kopete interprets 'em as Latin-1

At least if you're using ICQ, you can set the encoding per user in the user properties.

it is a completely useless option with my 500 users contact list.
this is the main reason I am not using this program and SIM bloatware is installed on my desktop.

Now that i have the patch for it i got it working and like however there is a need for more documentation features i would like to see for the yahoo side

MSN works but allways deliver the same boring error message : unknown error 715 ... isn't there a way to avoid these borring messages ? (nothing on the console)

ICQ works very well
IRC works well too but I don't like this interface to use it so I use xChat

One obvious missing feature is auto-reconnect. If I leave kopete running for any length of time I'm inevitably disconnected from a server - reconnecting should be transparent and there should be an option to disable any disconnected notices.

I'm not behind a firewall, i have a direct connection (256 kbps), not using any proxy. Instead, i cannot receive files using the kopete. What's wrong?? No one in any phorum i went could say kopete can receive files, only send. Is it true?

My kopete works great, and i'm loving it.
In the other hand, there's some troubles.

In first, i have a problem on receiving files. I used to believe that kopete don't receive files until it ocurred first (and a second too) time. After, it never hapenned again. What's happening?

In second, when i send files to my contacts, it takes a long time before they seeing a receiving notification.

In Third, nobody see the pictures i let for visualization in
"'kopete configuration' -> 'accounts' -> 'MSN' -> 'modify' -> 'informations'".
I translated to english, from my language, so i don't know if the names are allright, but i think it's easy to have an idea of how i'm doing.

Yes, that would be really kool, similar suggestion was posted on the thread concerning Konference, but unfortunately I haven't been able to compile and try out that app till this day, so...more work should definetly be invested in Konference, and it's integration with Kopete.

I use Kopete on a regular basis, and think its just great - the feature I really miss is a way to have video chat, all major IM clients out there support this (iChat, e.g.); so, plz implement this, much more important than buddy icons imho. yes, and sending files, pics for example, is there any way to do that?

Maybe intigrate konference (also found here) since it is a kpart. This would help both projects grow to a mature communication platform. Just my two cents!

I think kopetes great, some of the plugins are good. What would be cool though, is if I could invite my contacts to stuff like gnomemeeting, like i think i saw in KMess.
Also, one thing I like about a messenger used in windows called trillian, is the way it can be skinned. If these could be added to it I think it would be a top messenger.

Kopete will probably never support skinning, because of a political decision in the Kopete team to make a 100% KDE UI instant messaging client. This means, that it follows standard KDE behaviour all the way down to the mouse single/doublt click in the list, and also that it simply uses the standard UI theme to draw it's widgets. However, you can theme your chat sessions (best example of how extremely you can do this is the iChat Kopete theme found on kde-look.org).

The main thing that bothers me about Kopete is the lack of buddy icons. This may sound really trivial, but hey I think it's small things like this that distinguish good programs from great programs. I have heard that one of the main developers is working on this however... Hopefully next release :)

Buddy icons are supported for some protocols, but it's not quite as stable as you might wish it to be. But it's getting there :)
