Description:
The "x2go Mobile Desktop Environment" aims to be a free NX-based alternative for "server based computing". x2go supports session suspending by smartcard or usb-storage-device authentification, sound, mass storage devices and cdroms.
x2go can be sized form single user home pc to a multi-server enterprise installation. x2goclient will be available for different operating systems (win32 too).

absolut interesting app, but i can not see big differences between x2go and freenx in combination with LTSP. well, x2go offers kde-integrated managementinterfaces, but with ssh you can also securely connect nxclients over the internet. Are you planning to offer OS-X-clients ? will we be able to connect to Windows-Server over RDP, like you can do with nx ? I will check this great work, asap. I can only say: WOW!

Hello dmonat0307, the difference between x2go and freenx is that the client(s) are open source (gpl). x2go is able to take advantage of LDAP servers and you can take a session with you (session suspension) by smartcard or usb-stick authentification. x2go uses sshfs for file transfer. We are working on a windows client, but after the release it's possible to start the development of an osx client - x2goclient is qt4. You are the first person asking for a osx client. There is a command line client too - so it is easy to develop a gtk client. There will be no support for rdp - rdesktop is a great application and can be combined with krdc. Thank you for your "WOW".

Hello hmg, thanks a lot for your answers. Yes, the fact that x2go-client(s) are open source (gpl) is quite important, as well as the advantage of LDAP and session suspension. Nevertheless rdesktop is a great application I didn't understand why connecting to WTS with rdp in combination with krdc should be faster than using the compression abilities of nx? Maybe I misunderstood something. As you mentioned you're working on a VMware-Image. What about a Xen-Image? VMware-Products aren't GPL, but afaik Xen is. Wish you an obviously nice weekend :-).

Hello dmonat0307, we startet working on a OSX Client. It looks like we can release a Beta Version soon. What I meant regarding RDP is, taht you can use the rdesktop application startet on your server session to contact a WTS. At the moment our Client has no RDP support. The next Feature we are talking about will be a Printer Integration. We will discuss your statement "VMWare is not OSS" - There are a lot of VMWare Installations in the world... Until now I have had no experience with XEN, but I've been using VirtualBox. Greetings, Heinz

Hello hmg, thank you for your feedback. Well, I'm using VMware (WS/Player/Server) too, but my evaluation of XEN on Debian Etch were quite pleasent. Next time I have to change the hardware I'll buy a CPU with Vanderpool or Pacifica to be able to use unmodified MSWindows as well. Working with xen-utils and xen-tools on the console or xenman for graphical Xen management is also great fun. It seems that XEN has better performance than VMware, also the ability of using hardware exclusivly on DomU (the guestOS) is unique. So, why using proprietary solutions, when there are alternatives? Greetings, David

We are working on the translation, the windows client (already working but not transportable) and packages for ubuntu. There will be a Live-CD soon.
