I really don't have any problem with 3dDesktop...i tried it with Fedora 5 in both Kde and Gnome and with U(K)ubuntu with really no problem of speed.
3dDesktop is just for fun, just an amazing tool. Anyway I think your problems can be linked with GL configuration...
Your nickname is "Dapper"...does this mean that you're using this OS? If yes, consider that you situation can change with your distro update.
