Description:

VLSub is not working with Vlc 2.1.x, please update to 2.2.

Search and download subtitles from opensubtitles.org using the hash of the video currently playing or its title.
INSTALLATION:
- download the file from the "Files" tab above
- create a directory "extensions" at this location and put the file "vlsub.lua" inside:
* Windows (all users): %ProgramFiles%VideoLANVLCluaextensions
* Windows (current user): %APPDATA%vlcluaextensions
* Linux (all users): /usr/lib/vlc/lua/extensions/
* Linux (current user): ~/.local/share/vlc/lua/extensions/
* Mac OS X (all users): /Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/share/lua/extensions/
* Mac OS X (current user): /Users/%your_name%/Library/Application Support/org.videolan.vlc/lua/extensions/

...or use the installer below if you're on Windows 7 (32 or 64)

To start the extension click on View > VLSub or Vlc > Extensions > VLSub on Mac OS.

Limitation

* Impossible to automatically save the subtitles on Windows if the path to your video contain non ASCII (non-english) characters and the "search by hash" method will be slower.
* The "search by hash" method will fail on Windows if for video files >2Go (if VLC is compiled with lua 5.1 anyway)

Hello,
For those who have trouble with Vlsub 0.9.13, do the following. Go here C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc and open the hosts file in Notepad and at the end add, "92.240.234.122 api.opensubtitles.org" without quotes. Restart Vlc and this will solve the issue.

MY SYSTEM IS 32 Bit and I am not able to download any subtitle through VLC Media Player 2.2.4.Please Give A solution .It was quite Easy when The subtitle downloading was working

Thanks, that worked for me.
Mind you people, that a host file is part of you OS, not of VLC.

I had to add: 92.240.234.122 api.opensubtitles.org to ~/etc/hosts in Linux.

Is it save to conclude that it affects everybody?
Weather you are on Windows, Os-x or, as I do, on Linux?

What is the reason and why is there no solution?

Glad to see a number of others have had the same problem the fast day or so. Not working for me either. I'm on Windows 7 using VLC 2.2.4 The subtitles function worked like a charm until I tried to use it yesterday (2016-10-29). I've tried all the suggested fixes, the .lua download even did a complete uninstall and reinstall, but no luck. Waited a day and tried again thinking perhaps it was a problem at opensubtitles....but still no luck the afternoon of the next day. Why did it suddenly stop working? How to fix it. This function was the MAIN REASON I used VLC!

Same here, Vlsub 0.9.13 opens up, takes a few seconds and is giving an error message.
After clicking ok, VLC crashes.

The only problem I have been having with this is it does not reset itself after downloading a subtitle. On next search it tries to search for the previous file. It must be deactivated and restarted to work.

i dont like the opensubtitles subs: - they insert advertising inside the movie! - they mention their name at the end of the subtitles, BEFORE the end of the movie, come on, could they wait the credits at least ? - many times the subs found are not accurate to the file, not synced, or HI Now i get subs from subscene, they're more reliable and less annoying. Too bad because VLSub was a great idea.
