The colors make it look very childish. Perhaps go with a somewhat more serious (but boring) color scheme, like this:

Again, of course, I have to comment on the colours you have chosen ;) This time, however, it's more positive, because the way you have done it here is viable from a programatical point of view: You can use the list background and list alternative background to do this (in this case, of course, it would mean that you had a background in lists that was standard blue and alternative yellow, but that's a whole different discussion to get into ;) ).

I'm still not so sure about the way you have chosen to do the bottom, though. It's just the very small space available for the icon text... With the amount of space there, you won't even have space to write Documents (there is hardly room to write mnt). Why not just let it be as such, with the description text still only showing up on mouseover:

....description text....
. [o] . [o] . [o] . [o] .

The colors should adhere to the current KE colour scheme. If you deviate from them your menu will look out of place in different colour schemes.

Pass on the two last ones, unfortunately, but for the first one about what to put in the free place.

Why not do what you did originally: Put a Recently used applications or Most used applications list there? Just without the coloured backgrounds, which made it look a bit silly.

Dont't copy the usability sins of Microsoft. their XP menu is crap. We don't need a popup menu as we als ready have the iconbar.

KDE shall not follow this path.

I agree with this opinion, actually. I don't use kmenu at all... well quite rarely. Though for those who are coming to linux from winxp it can be useful.... but it will make the adaptation process quite slow.

I do use it quite a lot, as do most people I know who use KDE, simply because I use a lot more more than the three programs in my quick-launch. I do not wish to clutter my system with unnessecary icons. So, from that point of view, no matter if others use it or not is not the case, the K Menu is a fact, and why not make it the most usable it can be? Anything else would be rather silly.

If you in stead of instantly saying "XP iS Teh Sux0rz" actually look at this, it is not a copy of the XP menu. This re-design has been done with usability in mind (read the writeups on the first newMenu to see what I mean), and is thus not a copy of the XP one, which I totally agree is amazingly pants.

Maybe you should kill those pastel colours under the user menu/most used apps... They would be impossible to create in a sane way (as in something that would fit with colour themes), and would thus have to be hardcoded, something which is very much not in the KDE idea of theming. This also goes for the colours under the bottom parts (icons and logout/lock commands alike), you may want to find another way to signify them... (maybe a selected background with the text simply being put in the middle (it would also be easier from a programming perspective))

But after you put the description on the bottom icons, it hit me, maybe it would make sense to make it very highly configurable. If nothing else with a set of check boxes in the config dialog to select what should be in there, much like the Optional submenus in the current K-Menu configuration panel?

I like what I see this time much better than before :)

I would still say, however, that the left side (where you have the question mark now) ought to be what is currently at the top of the menu (most used or last used programs, an arbitrary number of 1 to 20 items, where here it would make sense to have at least 10, as opposed to the current 5).

The icons at the bottom, while a great piece of eyecandy ;), would make more sense to me, if it was a text-box (this is possible, I might add, simply using the current KPopupMenu) where you could write a command to run... Rather like my suggestion in the other newMenu idea...

Recent . . . . | . . . Applications
_____________________________
(|) \ Run XXXXXXXXX [o] / (-)

(|) being logout (shown the way you have it there, to show it's distinguished from the Run section)
[o] meaning run stuff in the XXXXXX textbox
Run being clickable (bring up the minicli)
(-) being lock (shown the way you have it there, to show it's distinguished from the Run section)
