Description:

Problem:
--------
KDE's Align to Grid sucks. It seems way over-engineered and
non-configureable. Why can't they make a simple grid and just stick to it?

Solution:
---------
Just align the icons to the grid manually. Avoids KDE trying to re-order
everything.

Step 1:
-------
Create '/opt/kde/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/lineup.desktop' with:

[Desktop Entry]
ServiceTypes=all/allfiles,inode/directory
Actions=alignIcons

[Desktop Action alignIcons]
Name=Align Desktop Icons
Icon=exec
Exec = /usr/local/bin/kdeiconalign.sh

Step 2:
-------
Create '/usr/local/bin/kdeiconalign.sh' with:

dcop kdesktop KDesktopIface lineupIcons

USAGE:
------
Right click on any icon on the desktop and select 'Align Desktop Icons'
from the 'Actions' submenu.

NOTES:
Would have been nice to append this to the 'Icons' submenu of the default
'Desktop Menu' but that too seems to be un-necessarily non-configurable.

SYSTEM:
-------
Slack 10, KDE 3.32, X.org 6.8.1

Would you know if it's possible to align the icons in Konqueror with a service menu? If so, that would be handy. I would do it myself if I knew how.

I don't see much change. The icons are still so helplessly overly spaced. (I was expecting a remedy for this.)

IMHO, the grid alignment works quite well but the grid is way too large! And there's no need to report a bug for this; it's a well known problem since KDE 3.1 at least.

Maybe something will be done for KDE 3.4 or --more likely-- KDE 4.x.

Wait and see! ;-)

Not really. It's just one of those minor but persistent annoyances. Thought this might help out others who share the same view - there seem to be a lot of them judging from the newsgroups chatter...
