A while ago i wrote a news-scrolling program for windows that worked exactly like the good old KNewsTicker on linux.
2008 i switched completely to linux and now i wanted also to step up to kde4. The only thing missing was the KNewsticker, which was discarded from kde4.2. The old Kde4.1 KNewsticker was unusable.
So i decided to get my beloved newsticker back on linux and wrote the NetNewsTicker for KDE 4.2.
I heavily used parts of the KNewsticker and rewrote the scrolling view and added some features i wanted to have.
I would like to share my work with anyone that also is longing for the good old KNewsTicker.
I prepackaged a deb file for kubuntu 9.04.
If you like to build it from source, invoke the following (after unpacking)
$>cd build
$>cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr/
$>make
$>sudo make install
Last changelog:

Initial version 0.5 uploaded
Fixed cmakelists.txt to correctly link on 64-bit systems
Changed source code to version 0.5-1 that fixes a bug in the feed updating.
Changed deb package for Jaunty to version .6 which fixes a bug in the size behaviour. It's now ready to be used on KDE 4.3 also.

Great job! I've been looking for plasmoid like that for ages!;) thank you :) ps: there're invalid download links, but i've quickly found valid one: http://netnewsticker.org/download/?lang=en ps2: there's probably some bug on kde 4.8.0 cause I can't change colour text:/

Very nice that someone has the mercy to make this desperately needed applet. But: is it really supposed to consume about 50% processing power on a 2600MHz Pentium for scrolling?

AlejandroNova

Updates per second: 3 Pixels per update: 8 More than that doesn't really make sense with a ticker like this one. That will lower your CPU usage dramatically, because you seem to have driver issues.

Hey, I'm looking for a horizontal feed ticker. Could I see a screen shot of this program? And maybe a 64-bit binary too, the i386 one is incompatible with my Kunbuntu.

Thanks for releasing this widget. It is the only one in it's class now for Linux afaict. Any ideas on how to modify the width of the widget? I would like to change it to 1200x120 Cheers.

Hi there! I'm running kde 3.5.8 on kubuntu gutsy. Can I still install this version? thanks in advance C-

jajaxor

Hi ! no you must have got KDE 4.x !

Christel

Thanks. I noticed - later - that it was a plasma thingie. Mourning knewsticker for the rest of my life I think... Thanks for taking the time to reply, C-

Very nice work on this plasmoid, exactly what I was looking for. A good ticker was one of the things missing after I recently switched from windows. Some feedback on the cpu usage issue: Using Kubuntu Jaunty 9.04 amd64. My cpu use seems to jump from 2-3% to ~10% (on one core of a Phenom II X4 955 @3.2Ghz stock speed). This isn't problematic for me but perhaps for someone using a netbook it might be. It seems to be related to the size (horizontal mainly) but the scroll speed seems to be the key variable. Seems to go down moderately when turning off desktop effects and to a lesser extent when using the "KDE 3.5 style" option. This is why I suspect it may be Plasma rather than NetNewsTicker itself. I haven't looked at the code, but I suspect size doesn't change what the plasmoid does, although perhaps the scroll speed causes more repaints? I have reduced the scroll speed and made it vertically as small as possible although horizontally it takes 1920 pixels along the top. A potential contributing factor: I am using the proprietary ATI drivers for my gfx card (Radeon HD 4890) and it doesn't play nice with the pixmap method used by KWin apparently. Slow/jerky window resizing being the only symptom I can notice to be honest. Not sure if this related or completely irrelevant! Anyhow, keep up the good work!

This is truly a good job! Just a couple of suggestions/improvements: 1) I compiled it from source for amd64 and the app seems to hog 30%-40% cpu. Could this be improved? 2) Contextual menu showing all feeds ala KNewsTicker should be implemented. 3) It would be nice to have the ability of importing Akregator feeds. 4) Konqueror may offer the option of loading a feed into NetNewsTicker, but I guess this cannot be done from the app. Thank you very much for your efforts!

Congratulations, a very good Job... and bring to kde4.2 the quality from this gadgets... there are some good programs from kde3++ that we could not forget and make a very high standart at linux desktops vs Rwindows. Thanks a lot. And congratlations once more. There are the bigginer of all apllets and sidebars of all desktops the Gkrellm, with a quality yet actual regards Ray

Your applet is exactly what i was looking for. Thank you very much and keep on the good work! :)

I added the ticker to my panel and it is about 2cm wide (!), which is not very useful. Is there some way to make it bigger? I have noticed the width of plasmoids on the panel can be problematic. TIA

christau

Yeah, it's only optimized to run in its own panel. I couldn't figure out, how to resize correctly if it's added to the dashboard or another panel. Greetings, -chris-

kdebigfan

Apparently, this is too small when it's added in some other panel. However, when I tried to added it as a widget on my desktop the CPU usage of Xorg turned to be analogous to the size of this applet. Plus, it seems that scaling could only be done with a locked ratio of width x height, which was not useful. Good idea, but it doesn't work for me.

jajaxor

Hi ! when the update is coming ?

christau

I already updated the sources but not the deb package. Can't you build it from source?

jajaxor

(sorry for my bad english) I already have got it of course ;) I speaked for news version (sorry)

christau

Yeah, haven't got the time to work on this project since the bug fixing. I use this applet day in day out and for now it fits my needs. If i'm starting to miss some features i might continue developing. But besides that, every one's invited to add his features because it's open source. Greetings, -chris-

Awesome work. Thanks so much. I made a 64bit rpm for Mandriva just using Checkinstall, so YMMV. http://www.dward.us/software

mck182

Hi, thanks for this great app, I just have one thing to point out - when compiling on 64bit, these three lines in CMakeLists.txt will break the compiling: /usr/lib/libQtXml.so /usr/lib/libsyndication.so /usr/lib/libQtNetwork.so It works when rewrited to /usr/lib64/lib... , so you should update the cmake to find these libs dynamically ;)

mck182

...after using it for a while I found out a few weird things, first, when I add third RSS source, the scrolling text becomes garbage when there are supposed to be the messages from the third feed (see http://martin.klapetek.googlepages.com/knetnews_screenshot_3.png ) and then always happens the second thing, if I have the default dot.kde.org in the list, then after running one round it converts all my added RSS sources into the dot.kde.org source. I'll try to investigate it more later and I'll let you know, but in the meantime if you have any idea what may be wrong, I'll be glad to hear some suggestions :)

christau

As for your error, i think it takes a deeper look at the behaviour. I had such error in the early beginnings of the project. It was a thread synchronization problem. This error looked similar to your snapshot. But i already fixed that problem. Maybe you can send me your ~/.kde/share/config/netnewstickerrc file, so i can try if i get the buggy view too. Greetings, -chris-
