Description:

Plasmoid providing fancy visualization of tasks, launchers and jobs for those who need full power of task manager and fresh look.
Developed and tested on KDE 4.8 with Qt 4.8 (Kubuntu 12.04).

Some screen casts:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5i2S1xCKPk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj4W6cqycl8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfqtnncLNcQ

Milestone 1.1 (current) will be last one using libtaskamanager and hopefully will be soon replaced by currently developed data engine based version (which should lower requirements back to KDE 4.6 or maybe earlier, depending on which one shipped first functional version of tasks data engine).

Milestone 2.0 will bring new dock management library which will allow for more advanced features. There will be also new, QML based, applet interface (might be available earlier, depends on progress on library).

Note that included panel was made only for test and could make various problems, use it on your own risk (I'll focus on it later).

This applet uses standard libtaskmanager like other task managers in KDE, so before you report bug check if it also happens in other applets (for example default Tasks applet).

Tips:
- to make applet more usable you can put it on panel with enabled option "Windows can cover" or similar;
- you can use theme with panel background similar to that of dock (for example Sabre Tiger) or modify current one using Desktop Theme Details;
- you can add launchers to applet by drag and drop of URLs and desktop files when Plasma is unlocked or using configuration dialog;
- to show only launchers you need to remove tasks area item from arrangement;
- to show application jobs you need to add jobs area.

Hidden options:
You can set them in applets configuration file (usually located at ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc), in group containing line plugin=fancytasks or plugin=fancypanel;
- initialZoomLevel - initial zoom level for zoom move animations (value ranging from 0 to 1, default: 0.7);
- paintBackground - decides if background should be painted or not (true or false, default: true);
- paintReflections - decides if icon reflection should be painted or not, note that it won't change icon size because of space allocation for drawing task indicators (true or false, default: true).

Features:
- manages your tasks, launchers and application jobs;
- tasks filtering, grouping (including manual) and sorting;
- keyboard navigation (Tab and Shift+Tab);
- launcher to task transition with custom connecting rules (icons of launchers with running tasks are hidden if sorting other than manual is enabled);
- tool tips with live preview of windows when KWin Taskbar Thumbnail effect is enabled;
- highlighting windows when hovering cursor over task or window preview when KWin Highlight Window effect is enabled;
- dropping files on launchers runs command with parameters or gives option to move, copy or link them (if target is directory);
- visual drop indicator that helps in manual tasks sorting and rearranging launchers;
- possibility to browse directories of directory launchers using context menu;
- possibility to add application menus;
- menu with list of all icons shown after activating keyboard shortcut;
- configurable animations (zoom, jump, bounce, highlight, etc.) and appearance (optional thumbnails and text label);
- fully animated icons (including animations of starting applications, tasks needing attention and application jobs progress).

If you have found bugs or have suggestions you can contact me via email, message or using comments, before you will vote bad.
And remember that not everybody has enough time for fast replying. ;-)

Don't be silly, don't vote bad just for fun!

You mean variant of zoom animation with bigger factor difference for active icon, right?
It could be done, but probably configuration GUI will need some redesign, there are two possibilities, both include removing of "Parabolic" check box.
First would be adding combo with kind of animation mode: parabolic (the same role as checked "Parabolic" check box), magnification (your proposition) and simple (the same as unchecked, animation affects only active icon), these option names could be changed to something better however.
Second is to insert additional entries to to animation type combo box, for example "Parabolic Zoom", "Magnification" etc. (only for relevant types) and have similar mode selection but as hidden option (could be used to fine tune less common combinations, not included in combo), changed not directly when selecting animation type, for example "Parabolic Zoom" would mean zoom animation type with parabolic animation mode.
Which would be better solution? Maybe something different?

don't overcomplicate things ;)

maybe what i mean with magnification (and how it is called in mac os x) is the same as parabolic zoom, however, here is an example: http://www.trickyways.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/mac-dock.jpg

for the configuration, maybe something like this could be enough: http://www.trickyways.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/03-change-dock-settings.png ?

Sure, good solution for clean configuration UI but still useful for everyone is not easy task. ;-)

And yes, that effect is similar to current parabolic zoom but with smaller initial factor (there is option to adjust initial size factor in configuration file).

UI of MacOS is good model but if I will make it very similar then people will say that I'm cloning it. They say it already, and yes it is inspired by it and is similar in many cases (everything that displays by default only icons looks like dock clone, even if it is not task manager) to that solution but I'm not intend to make clone (for milestone 2 I'll maybe think about alternate or more customizable GUI) but it is not even possible when you never seen a Mac. ;-)

Hi!

Thank you for a very nice applet! The only thing I would like is a setting to disable reflection and the background plate.

Also, I can't save the settings. It reverts back to default when logging out. Is there a settings file that I can manually tweak?

It's possible. ;-)
It was generated using kdesvn and it's not first time when part of patch is broken...

Thanks. :-)

These options were already available in the past (at least option to not paint reflection) but were removed because of configuration dialog bacame a bit too cluttered... Maybe these could be resurrected as hidden options to set in configuration file and described in README like initialZoomLevel option.

All settings are unsaved or only for example arrangement? I guess that this doesn't happen with other applets. :-)
Which distribution are you using and was it installed from package or from source?
Configuration is stored in main Plasma applets configuration file, usually ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc, search for group containing line plugin=fancytasks.

Sounds great! It's not that I think the panel looks bad or anything. It's just that I'm not much for transparency and shinyness at all on the desktop. I feel at home when my desktop gives me a cozy feeling, as when you walk into an old style english pub or something. It seems like I'm a minority... most people prefer the modern, shiny, flashy, arty, iEverything - feeling that I get when walking into an Apple store or a modern café. Not my cup of tea =)

That wasn't really relevant now was it, hehe? Anyway, I think it's great that people have different taste... but as for my me, I'de be a happy christmas child if I could tweak away just a little bit. Just don't go Cairo Docks, that makes my head spin =)

As for the settings... it saves the size and position of the panel.. but when I add my own launchers etc they disappear. I installed it from source on Kubuntu 9.10, kde 4.3.1

Thank's for a fantastic app, and keep it up!

Sure, not everybody must like style of Mac dock background. :-)
There is in fact simple trick to make transparent background, create empty file and name it for example empty.svg as dock background (I need to ask artist to create some more, not only in typical dock design).

You mean that you use testing Fancy Panel, not applet directly?
There was report about this, but I've still no idea why it happens...
If there would be better documentation or examples for containments, then life would be easier. ;-)

Report

spacelime

11 years ago

Thanks, that worked to remove the background. However it also comes back as I log out and in again.

How do you mean if I use the applet directly? I installed it from the source package since I'm running 64 bit. And then I right clicked the desktop and chose "add panel".

Starting from v0.9.5 (or another, don't remember ;-)) I've added experimental panel containment for testing purposes that loads only Fancy Tasks. Normally you should add it using Add Widgets dialog, like other applets and for example put it on normal panel (then it doesn't paint own background) or desktop (in both cases everything works good for sure). But own panel (added by "Add Panel" menu) is still not finished and has many problems still (for example it is not usable currently when located on left or right edge) and it was reported that it looses it's settings.
And that line is not available there because of unsaved configuration (name of main KDE settings directory doesn't matter).

I'll try to find reason, I'm still not very familiar with containments API and probably it's missing something small and easy to do. ;-)

Oh, by the way. It turned out that I don't have a line that says 'plugin=fancytasks' in that file.

Maybe it could have something to do with the fact that on my system there is no ~/.kde4/ folder but instead a ~/.kde/?

This version introduces major changes in many parts of applet code so if you find regressions (like not painted icons) please report them.
Next release will be mostly for polishing and improving various things, not adding new features until 1.0 milestone will be reached. When it will be released I'll most probably focus on working on new library for managing task and launchers which hopefully will allow better management than current combination of libtaskmanager and hacks to make it usable with launchers. It will help in work towards milestone 2.0.

I'm trying to do it as best as I can (others probably too :-)).

I'll try to fix regressions as soon as possible (especially that nasty bug with some icons not painted sometimes) and release bug fix during this weekend. :-)

I just wanted to say that I really like the new fancy panel. For some reason though, the settings are not remembered after rebooting. Sometimes they stay in the config and it's enough to simply click OK to restore them, but other times everything gets set to default values (also when there is a plasma crash ;-)).

Also the fancy panel size is limited - I'd like to stretch it to a larger size if possible to accommodate more launchers and tasks. Currently I have no more room for jobs as well.

Thanks again for your work - It's really appreciated.

Cheers!

Thanks. :-)

Panel in current version is nearly unusable, but new version planned for next week should improve it greatly (at least when on bottom). It should change width with applet and it is possible to change it's height using controller.
I'll test it on my environment, but for sure Plasma often messes settings for panels (handled automatically as far as I know) and when I set auto hide for testing panel then after restart that setting goes to default panel, or their location is swapped...
And remember, panel is still very experimental. ;-)
