Description:

This is a fork of mbaszczewskis STasks plasmoid. For the original STasks code go there:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/STasks?content=99739

This taskbar replacement has window peeking similar to Windows 7 when you use the kwin 'highlight window' effect. Even if this effect is not used you can click the tooltip in order to activate the corresponding window.

About Launcher Support, Grouping and Sorting:
A feature often requested in the comments is support for launchers and a more comprehensive context menu. Because the information about which task items there are, their grouping, sorting and state (minimized, demands attention, is active, ...) and even their context menu is all provided by libtaskmanager, such feature requests should be directed to kdelibs. I wrote a wishlist entry in the kde bugtracker for these features: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=207902 If you want this feature vote for this wish.

Update:
Launcher support exists in KDE 4.6. I will incorporate this feature once KDE 4.6 is available in Fedora (and I have time).

Update 2:
I pulled all changes made by flupp and jimi312, which amongst other things add launcher support. You can download the most recent source directly from the mercurial repository:
https://bitbucket.org/panzi/smooth-tasks/get/tip.tar.bz2

However, because I experienced some bugs with the launcher support (sometimes they are shown when the associated app is running and sometimes they are not shown when the associated app is not running) I did not make a new release yet. If I can find the bugs in a few hours tomorrow (2nd Apr 2011) or flupp/jimi312 fix them I will make a new release. I don't know how much time I have to work on Smooth Tasks. :/

Update 3:
The mentioned bugs concerning launchers seem also to be present with KDE's original taskbar, so I think the bug lies in libtaskmanager and not in Smooth Tasks.

Bugreports and Wishes:
http://bitbucket.org/panzi/smooth-tasks/issues/

Packages:
Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora have official packages.

Fedora:
sudo yum install kde-plasma-smooth-tasks

And to get meaningful backtraces:
sudo debuginfo-install kde-plasma-smooth-tasks

Note: I didn't check the validity of any of these packages!

Poll: Which Layout should stay?
I have created a poll about which of the various layouts supported by Smooth Tasks should be kept and which I can drop:
http://twtpoll.com/dm5m96

Please participate in this poll so I know whether I have to bother with supporting all of the currently provided layouts. In case you do not use multiple rows please choose the first option. In this case most layouts should look the same anyway.

Great! After KDE 4.6 is released and I installed a distribution that supports KDE 4.6 I will look into this! :)

4.6 is available on archlinux, through the kde-unstable repo. The feature to pin applications is already there in the beta release. You could install it in a VM and give it a try if you'd like. :)

I really have not much time to invest in smooth tasks right now and I really don't feel like installing a virtual machine. I use this feature once KDE 4.6 is stable and available for Fedora. Yes, this way I lag behind but I don't care. I don't want to work with non-final things. The new Fedora version (14) is enough broken as it is (graphic and sound errors and it didn't boot after I installed it; it's ridiculous how much more broken every release is).

Hi, I think it would look good if it was possible to show the icons not in the left side (if panel is horizontal) or top side (vertical), but on the other side or in the middle of the panel. Would look awesome, imho. Thanks in advance.

Any plans on implementing blur into smoothtasks? Would be great, thanks!

Someone already sent me a patch for that. I wrote back that I merge it if it doesn't break 4.4 compatibility or when I finally switch to 4.5 (that happens when it comes available in Fedora). I haven't heard from the patch writer since. Hope no mail went into junk. :/

It was my who sent you the patch! :) I understood you reply this way, that you would merge it as soon as you switch to KDE 4.5.

AFAIK it does not break backwards compatibility.

But there is still a major glitch with smooth-tasks and resizing panels: I have my panel set to minimum width and growing, centered on the bottom center of the screen. Now smooth-tasks fails to determine the correct width and the panel is cropped on the right side. It is fixed after opening and closing some apps. If this could be fixed, it would be awesome!

Sorry forgot to add something.

As you know, one can close the windows by hovering the mouse over the popup thumbnail menu & middle clicking it.

A neat feature is that the thumbnail menu then refreshes/updates minus that one window that you just killed. Allowing you to continue killing.

However, this doesn't seem to work if the kicker bar is set to autohide; the bar immediately hides itself along with the thumbnail menu.

Thanks again for listening!

Disable window title popup for applications with only one window.

Currently, even though there is only one window for the application entry, a popup still appears indicating the name of that one window.

While this might be useful if window thumbnails are enabled, it is counter productive and highly distracting otherwise.

Additionally, there should be an option allow one to choose if the "animation duration" applies even after first contact.

Eg, Currently, i set the "animation duration" as 600ms so that those stuff won't keep popping up to distract me as I am merely hovering across tab entries to pick a window. However, if I slow down too much and accidentally activate it for one application, the "animation delay" for subsequent ones is effectively reduced to zero!

Thanks for listening

Does anyone else notice high CPU use (on my system ~10%) with kwin, xorg or plasma-desktop when using this plasmoid on KDE 4.4.90? I noticed that the paint plugin shows Smooth Tasks is constantly redrawing the icons.

But there are still problems with 4.5 Beta. The actice window always has the look of an inactive one.

Keep Expanded: From the current desktop

Does not work, even the windows of the current desktop are often not expanded.

It would be really cool if you could implement dwm-style task grouping,
Eg: 1 group for chat, 1 for browsing, 1 for devel etc, it would go really well with the new kwin tiling feature

hi, I thoght that a nice feature would be to let the tasks show in the middle of the plasmoid instead of only on the left side, just for us symmetric folk. Shouldn't be too hard.

The fork is here
http://bitbucket.org/flupp/smooth-tasks-fork/overview
but it is really buggy and panzi wrote that he doesn't want to make any changes until it will be merged.

Here are some problems you can fix
Regressions:
1) tiny icons/big margins - with the same size of panel icons are much smaller. It looks that the margins are too big. . This is problem mainly with smaller panels.
2) lights - the default setting of margins (without custom margins workarounds) should be the same like in the original smooth-tasks (3px) now it is too big

Other that can be improved in the new version:
- Minimal and maximal button width should be near each other. Or better solution is removing the Expanding size option and make new option of interval min/max expanded size. Default setting should be min=max=175.
- Instead of Minimal Icon Space there should be Minimal Ratio of Frame, it is more logical and now it behaves strange with some small icons (for example the plasmoidviewer icon). The ratio should be limited from 1 to infty.
- The option Anchor Light (vertically, horizontally) is not called correctly when the applet is in vertical position. But I have no idea how to call it to avoid confusion :)

Other problems in the old version:
- is there really necessary to set exactly the Move duration, Highlight Delay, Frames per Second, Animation Duration ans Animation speed? There should be in one option Animation Speed, from fast to slow. (Or even more heretic idea, use the settings of animation speed in Desktop effects)
- the should be delay between moving pointer on the applet and hovering of the tooltip, check the WIN7
- add the kinetics Qt animations
- add pinning feature, but with pinning, there is the problem that the fancy tasks developer wrote that he will make a new library with some new features so it can be duplicate effort

But if you think that you can help, you should try.
