Description:

Modified version of KDE 4.7 taskbar applet and taskmanager library.

Modifications:

1. Show only icons (no text) in taskbar.
2. When a launcher is activated, place the task's taskbar entry at the same location as the launcher.
3. Tasks with no associated launcher, are placed after launcher tasks (unless alphabetically sorted).
4. Always group tasks.
5. Only allow launchers for items with .desktop files
6. Add a dialog to manually set the association from a window to a .desktop file - so that launcher can be created.
7. Add option to activate/iconify whole group when left button is pressed (taken from SmoothTasks). If disabled, then present windows is used for the group.
8. Use oxygen '+' icon to indicate a collpased group.
9. Use middle button to launch new instance of a task.
10. Attempt to place start-up spinner over launcher/task.
11. Add option to always use the launcher icon for taskbar entry - even when app is active. This works-around the issue where some applications (e.g. LibreOffice) have a different launcher/menu icon than the actual app uses.
12. Workaround an issue with a tasks attention state.
13. More tasks shown in tooltips.
14. Close tasks via tooltips.
15. Show right-click menu for task in tooltips.
16. Option to show job progress over task icon.
17. DockManager API support
18. Media player buttons in tooltips
19. Unity API
Last changelog:

0.9.2
=====
1. Allow DockManager "icon-file" to refer to an icon name.
2. Add DockManager API extension (capability "x-kde-dock-item-overlay", dock item property "x-kde-overlay") to allow plugins to specify an overlay icon to be placed top-left of icon.
3. Dont attempt to get commandline for pid 0 - seems to crash KSysGuard library.
4. Use plasma themed close icon for tooltips.
5. Clear any exising entries before showing recent documents menu.
6. When reloading xbel/office recent documents, only clear old documents of that type.
7. When an action is marked as a separator, add a separator to the menu - just adding the action leads to an entry that looks like a menu title.
8. Read LibreOffice 3.4 recent documents from recently-used.xbel
9. Fix DockManager::GetItemsByPid

0.9.1
=====
1. When changing tooltip from one item to the next, call the toolTipHidden slot - so that the item can unregister from the tooltip signals.
2. Fix compilation with KDE less than 4.7
3. Fix dockmanager plugin sub-menus.
4. If compiled against KDE 4.8, dont need IconTask specific taskmanager.

0.9.0
=====
1. Use KSysGuard libraries to read process information.
2. Only ever show the separator if we actually have some launchers.
3. Rename taskmanagerrc to taskmanagerrulesrc
4. Middle click on tooltip is same as middle click on task.
5. Add middle click option - "Move To Current Desktop"
6. When manually moving launchers/tasks, move immediately rather than showing the drop indicator. The previous behaviour may be re-enabled by passing -DICON_TASKS_SHOW_DROP_INDICATOR_FOR_MOVE=true to cmake.
7. If there are too many windows for tooltip, display "Plus X more..."
8. Better calculation of rws and columns in tooltip.
9. Fix not being able to interact with first launcher/entry whilst a task is starting.
10. Fix totally broken dockmanager config UI.
11. Dont check if filename changes dock dockmanager, always update if an icon name is set.
12. Only store 1 container of launchers - not map for launchers, and list for sort order.
13. Fix detection of kcmodule launchers.
14. Try not to use exec() to open config dialogs, so as to not freeze plasma!
15. Remove usage of custom properties in QActions for menus.
16. Use standard KOpenWithDialog to select applications. Allows creation of non-desktop based launchers.
17. Save launcher lock state in applet, not taskmanager library.
18. All changes to taskmanager library are now in KDE/master. Because of this there is no 'basic' menu setting, as the menus have been re-arranged. The only difference between IconTasks's taskmanager and KDE (as of 4.8) taskmanager is the name of the Advanced sub menu. In KDE/master this is now know as "More Actions"
19. Don't set DESKTOP_SESSION to ubuntu, UnityFox has been updated an version 0.2.2 no longer requires this. For an updated UnityFox see:

I think this is more due to the fact that the items are as small as they can go, hence another row is created. This is as I explained before. Not ideal, but tiny task items are not ideal either.

Yeah, I could've made that screenshot a bit better really.

http://ompldr.org/vYjhxOA
http://ompldr.org/vYjhxOQ

Both of these were taken at the same time, only difference is the separator.

http://ompldr.org/vYjhxYQ

This one is the same as the first, except I launched another program to show that it should all fit in one column. It's really strange.

...and the separator takes space, and tips things over the edge.

But that's just it, I launched another program when I didn't have the separator, and that didn't tip it over the edge.

Look, this is how it normally looks: http://ompldr.org/vYjh2cw

Here, I have four extra programs launched, which adds four icons: http://ompldr.org/vYjh2dA
Note, there's still room in the panels max space to expand the panel even further, if needed.

Then, I close those four programs, and then I add a separator: http://ompldr.org/vYjh2dQ

This is what I find strange, why did it accept four extra icons and still keep within a single column, when just one separator tips it over? It's not as the separator takes up more room than 4 icons.

I've tried a hundred times to build this thing. when I run cmake it spits out the following errors
CMake Error at /usr/share/kde4/apps/cmake/modules/FindPackageHandleStandardArgs.cmake:198 (MESSAGE):
Could NOT find DBusMenuQt (missing: DBUSMENUQT_LIBRARIES
DBUSMENUQT_INCLUDE_DIR)
Call Stack (most recent call first):
/usr/share/kde4/apps/cmake/modules/FindDBusMenuQt.cmake:90 (find_package_handle_standard_args)
CMakeLists.txt:24 (find_package)

I've used apt-file to check the dependencies, which include paraview libvtk5-dev libphonon-dev libcgal-dev kdelibs5-dev among others. I have all of the dependencies installed so why is cmake failing?

When I try adding the ppa:gnumdk/ppa I just get apt errors. what is going on here?

As cmake is telling you, you need the dbusmenu-qt packages installed.

dbusmenu-qt

strange, when I used apt-file on the errors, it mentioned libphonon-dev and libplasma5-dev but didn't direct me to the dbus stuff. I assumed that the dbus files were installed with those packages. Thanks, compiling now!

Hey dude,

Really awesome work on this applet! It has replaced my default taskbar (there are some bugs in there) and I'm very happy with it. Maybe you should diff it with the default plasma taskbar and send a patch :D

In any case, I do have one request: can you get us the same grouping options as in the default one ("only when taskbar is full") or at least allow to disable it completely? I don't like it one bit as it slows down working with the interface :D

Report

No, grouping will *always* happen. Sorry, thats the way it is designed. I don't see any point in having two identical icons on the taskbar - you'd still need to mouse-over to determine which is which.

Code is already in KDE/master - kde-workspace for taskmanger library, and kdeplasma-addons for applet. Will be in KDE SC4.8

Hello,

I would like to be able to disable grouping as well. This applet is really great, the grouping is only thing that bothers me.

I has been using Smooth Tasks (it unfortunately does not work in KDE 4.8) with disabled grouping and I think you are not right when saying "there is no point displaying two icons". You may know which is which by their position. You don't have to mouse over on them.

Moreover, why multiple wine apps are grouped into one icon?

Jesus .. there are still things you CANNOT do in KDE? I love KDE for the flexibility it offers, I love this widget for the screen estate it saves, but I do hate it that I'm not able to NOT group windows. I'm using Chromium with web apps. Why would want all my apps grouped under a single icon?
Take for example imo.im. I'm using that as an app. If I have a new message the icon will be orange and I'll know then that I have a new message. With the windows grouped I'm not able to see that. I only see the chromium icon. This is just my case, but I'm sure others will be happy to have this feature included.

Please please please add this feature.

It seems the width of the applet is always determined based on the width of all running tasks, even those on another desktop/activity.

When disabling the options "Only show tasks from the current desktop/activity", the full widget is populated.

No, that cannot be it. I know there is a problem with the resizing, as this affected my attempts to have a center-aligned dock.

But, the tasks shown in the applet are the only ones it knows about. The taskmanager library will remove items when the desktop is switched. Basically, the library (taskmanager) knows about all windows/tasks all the time. But the applet only knows about what is displayed - hence can only size based upon this.

Hi, Craig! Thank you for the great work! Sorry for my English. Translated with Google translator. Is it possible to do so I can choose the size and color of the indicators?

The indicators can be themed, they come from the icontasks/indicators.svgz

If you edit this file, then you can control the colour and size - for size you probably need to add an invisible border.

Hi Graig,

Great work and it is great that things are getting integrated into KDE 4.8. However what I noticed is that the check you implemented to see if it is compiled on KDE 4.8 is incorrect. At this moment KDE 4.8 will be consisting out of the latest kdelibs 4.7.x with all other KDE modules being 4.8. This means that the version check will always indicate 4.7.x and not 4.8.0 as you have in the CMakeLists.txt. This is at least the current status. However I am not sure how to check it otherwise.

Its no big deal, as the version of taskmanager in IconTasks should be in sync with KDE/master - so if the custom version is installed, it wont harm anything.

Also, AFAIK, the current plan is to release the latest KDE4.7 libraries as KDE4.8 - so as to keep the current dependencies.

IconTasks itself is now in kdeplasma-addons.

Right now the icons are aligned to the left, as Windows 7 does. Can we have the option to make them centered (as Mac OS does), or aligned to the right (as no one else does)? (Aligned right would become aligned to the bottom on vertical panels.)
