In Kubuntu 20.04, upon selecting an item in the popup list, the corresponding *.desktop file is opened in the text editor. To have the widget launch the application, the *.desktop file has to be made executable. Most *.desktop files are in /usr/share/applications and are not all consistently executable. The widget should unconditionally launch the selected application.
The fact is that it only happens when I open an app from Popup Menu. When I click on a desktop file from Dolphin, for instance, it behaves correctly and launches the app.
Is there anything I can do to help you?
I have the same issue. The desktop files are all opened in kate text editor.
I installed popup laucher manually, because trying to install with KDE (system tray->add application->load new widget) resulted in a "file not found" error. Maybe this is relevant?

Great widget. Feature request: change hover-over description to a custom one, as I have several of these on my panel with different groups of apps in.

Scratch that. With the latest version the *.desktop file opens in the editor even if it is executable.
I cannot give the 10 points because I like to have a better way to order the apps. maybe an auto sort by name will be enough. thank's for your work
